I had a basset once that i found in the woods, she was skin and bones just lying on her side, I thought she was dead till i saw her eye move. She must have been lost a long time since the ends of her ears and the pads on her feet were worn off. I brought her home and spent a small fortune on her to get her straightened out. After she was well I had to keep an eye on her all the time because she'd put her nose to the ground and wonder off and get lost again. She was really stupid, and I later found a list of dogs rated by their intelligence, and bassets were at the bottom, so that explains it I guess, she sure was lovable though.

So what was the smartest? I know Husky's are real sharp. My Girlfriend just had to put Capi (as in El Capitain) to sleep. He was 17 yrs old and a highly intelligent dog. He was part Husky, wolf and malmute.

She is 148 lb now and can't eat nearly enough. She figured out how to open the cat food tub in the garage so now I have to set a weight on the lid of it. I also have a rooster and some hens that protect my coop outside.

Border collie, though I personally wouldn't want one, my neighbor has one and it just seems like you have to keep him occupied all the time. I guess I just don't want a dog that's smarter than I am. I'll take my Great Danes, they're laid back, and I don't have to bend over to pet them.:D
Here's a link to an apparently updated list, and I'm pleased to say that the Basset has moved up some! Ihttp://www.answers.com/topic/the-intelligence-of-dogs#wp-Lowest_Degree_of_Working.2FObedience_Intelligence I'm not so sure I agree with the list though, since it all depends on what criteria you use to judge their intelligence.

Beautiful dog, but it's not a Harlequin, it's a Merle. And be careful how much it eats, bloat is one of the leading causes of death in Danes

I got one of those but his only use is to trip up intruders because he thinks they might feed him. This Cat thinks he's Garfield, no really! He even loves Lasagne.
The Hamb I give to you 21 yes 21lbs of Widget, you got to love him.

A few of you guys posting your cats reminded me of when I was a kid and had a "French Lop" Rabbit that used to run loose in the back yard, it was about 20 pounds. One day a cat came after it and Buffy (I was 8 what kind of name do you want? thor?) kicked the cat right in the head and killed it....cats suck :D

Shop dog Buddy, through cold, hot, wet, whatever, this guy is with me at the shop. Since I work by myself most of the time at night in an industrial area, it's good to have a dog to alert me when someone walks or drives up. There has been one guy walk up on me that Buddy didn't hear/see first and I almost bit the guy's leg off. I don't like surprises and I damn sure can't stand being scared. Every since then Buddy hasn't let anyone come up on me. He works cheap and always listens to my bitchin and groanin, never complains unless its dinner time. One last thing, Buddy gets me up at the same time, every morning, like clock work. It's amazing. Anyway, have fun.:)
