Technical Let's talk about seat foam

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Roothawg, Mar 10, 2023.

  1. How is your seat project doing?

  2. Jaguar (and maybe other British cars) used a 'special' Dunlop rubber diaphram for the lower seat 'spring'. Look at '70s to mid '90s XJS bucket seats. They didn't have room for a conventional spring, used these instead. Very comfortable seats. If it's not torn or has broken loops for attachment to the seat frame they're still good. I've got a stash of OEM ones, but new replacements are available...

I'd be inclined to avoid memory foam. I hate the stuff! My wife and I allowed ourselves to be talked into a memory foam mattress once, and never again. It was a few years ago, and my back still hasn't quite recovered.

Its claim to fame is that it takes on the shape of your body, but that means that it yields where it ought to support and protrudes where it ought to recede. And because it forms a tight-fitting depression around your body, it leaves less of your body surface area exposed to air, causing you to sleep hot.

I'd expect the same issues to apply to car seats. Lumbar support, especially, would end up effectively being a hole.

I was given the foam portion of the seats from a 68-72 era Chevy PU. They are a relatively generic shape and I plan to cut them down for use in a channeled 32 PU. The density is perfect as is.

I use Sea-Foam in all my cars and trucks and even in my diesel tractor. The stuff is great in my book!
