Let's try this again...How people/places/things in our hobby are pronounced...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 3wLarry, Jan 4, 2010.

  1. While we're at it, let's ask Manfred Mann if he ever learned to properly pronounce 'deuce'....:D

Quote Songfact's site: " This was Springsteen's first single. It was released only in the US, where it flopped. It was, however, a #1 hit for Manfred Mann's Earth Band in 1976. Their version was much more elaborately produced, and Springsteen hated it at first.
Manfred Mann's version replaces the line "Cut loose like a deuce" with "Revved up like a deuce." In their version, "Deuce" was commonly misheard as "Douche." Springsteen's original line makes a lot more sense - a deuce is a 1932 Ford hotrod. On his
Storytellers special, Springsteen said (in a jesting manner) that the only reason Manfred Mann's version went #1 was because they said "Douche" instead of "Deuce." (thanks, Anthony - New York, NY)"

Someone (UK?) posting on this board recently mentioned replacing a wing on their car. I interpreted this as meaning a fender.

  5. At the Detroit Autorama one year I asked a guy from one of the car mags if they could put a phonetic spelling behind any difficult name in the text - I specifically used Gejeian as an example. He thought it was a good idea but...

I've had a few disagreements over the years about Rich Guasco. I always figured it was "gwa-sko". A buddy insisted it was "gwar-sko". I know some Californians add an "r" to some words (i.e."warsh" instead of "wash") so it seemed possible. I finally met him one year at Autorama and he said "gwa-sko" was correct.

Only "Californians" who migrated from Boston...

I think DZUS is 'spozed to be pronounced ZOOS but starting with the tongue against the top teeth as if you were going to pronounce the "D" but you don't, exactly.
When I was a teenager a friend and I decided we'd pronounce it "DUZ-us" just for fun, full knowing it was probably wrong

  7. Hahaha....yeah, you're right, now I remember...."i-deer" - not "i-dee-uh".

  9. WTF is your problem? I had never heard of Gotha and couldn't find any references on the net, other than a German town, an airplane, and a dictionary, so I asked. I see that there were a couplpe threads on heer about them but not much real information so excuse me for asking.

Never said or asked anything about Definitive or Pronunciation so I guess you pulled that out of your ass.

And if you really think I know it all then I can't be ignorant, by the definitive definition of the words. I never claimed to know it all by any means, merely listed some pronunciations as I know them, sorry for trying to be helpful and partake in the discussion since apparantly that doesn't fit you agenda. I believe that you indeed are the actual "Jackass" .

In "O-hi-a" we called it "Louie-ville", but there its more like "Loll-vil" - at least the way this dam yankee hears it.

I always heard this was pronounced "molly-be-damned"

we don't add R to anything. we simply move over it on our way from Q to S.

After reading through this entire thread, I'm thinking perhaps we also need threads on correct keyboard coordination and proper grammar with emphasis on syntax.

In other words, how to read, write, and think .

Oh wait, isn't that what the U S educational system supposed to teach (obvious to those who DO think that this effort has been without success for a long time), and the Hamb is a place for us to share our thoughts about TRADITIONAL pre-1964 hot rods?

My Grampy looks at me weird if I say car. Now, if I got out of my way to purposely mispronounce it like a true Mainah' and say "kaaaah", there's no problems.
This helps to make you less threatening when you go out to the willywags of Maine to talk 'bout that kaaaah over en dem weeds, ayuh.'

Thanks for clarifying a lot of these pronunciations fellas.

As far as the U.K. is concerned, you're right.
We'd use the term mudguard for what you'd call a cycle fender.

Here's another: Enderle (as in fuel injection). I've always thought it is pronounced en-der-lay but I have heard it pronounced en-derl.

Along those same lines the common mistake I see more often is substituting "your" for "you're". Two different words, two different meanings, and two slightly different pronunciations. "Your" is always possessive. "You're" is the conjunction of "you" and "are".

    Remember, Larry started this.
