I started this to talk about him he's my grandpa and I'm named after him (Levie Edward Jones 2) thanks
TTT Hey Guys, This young man is trying to find information about his Grandpa, Levie Jones. He was a racer and also manufactured speed equipment. The items I'm most familiar with are Quick Changes. But, I understand that he also made MAGNESIUM SBC blocks! Let's help him out. Bruce
Levie, Great to see a young man (12) interested in his roots. Hope you can find some info and post it here. If there are some things you want to share, have at it! Welcome to the HAMB, Carp
Here are a some of pictures of Jones Quickchanges. I have one in my shop that I need to take some pics of too. Maybe tomorrow! The first two are of a full size (3/4 ton) with a super cover. I've never seen one like this before. I'm not sure if it aluminum or magnesium. All the Jones stuff I have ever had was mag. This one doesn't have that coloring, but it might be painted with aluminum paint. I'm not sure if the side bells are Jones or something else. Several companies had that 8 rib design. I have a pair of Jones bells that are much different. The third pic is a V8 size case. Look how beefy the internal ribbing is, connecting the nose bearing support to the front of the case. Finally, this last one is again 3/4 ton. Note the square bottom of the change gear flange. I had one of these with the matching cover. But, it got put into action on a race car and I never got pictures of it. I think that the Super cover shown above or a round bottom would work with this center. The square cover allowed for more gear lube without the wings of the super cover. By the way, several of the old guys I have talked to that made Quickchanges always referred to gear lube as 'Grease'.
I am going to bump this up, with a little bit of useless chatter. Growing up in Southeastern Ohio, I always heard gear lube referred to as "gear grease". Using the old adage "A pint is a pound, the whole world 'round", service stations would bill it to the customer by the pound. Here in Southwest Wyoming, it is strictly referred to as gear oil.
I am wondering if anyone might have some literature or a catalog. The first time I saw Joenco was in the title of this thread.
Levie (Levi) Jones and Joenco are mentioned in the vintage sprint car picture thread. You might try posting on it, and there was a Facebook group on midgets (also a cageless midget thread here) where you may find more info. Joenco may have advertised in Open Wheel, in the early '80's.
Here are some pictures of a different style Jones Quickchange: This one has the change gear cavity in the center section and a flat plate rear cover. The side bell is 11 ribs. I built one like this for a friends race car but never got pictures. Looked good and very unique, had the Dow7 finish.
Jones the racer 92, In order attract more responses to this thread, we need to keep it coming back up to the top. How about if I ask you some questions that maybe your Dad might know the answers to? Then more people will see it and hopefully chime in. For instance, "When did your Grandpa start making Quickchanges?" And, "How many different types did he make?"
Probably, but there must be enough of those guys on here to at least give some direction. My oval track experience is pretty limited. Michigan, Asphalt, late models '74 - late '80s, mostly.
