Carefull with that...for awhile here in Fl they turned it into a criminal citation with a $2000 fine and possibly jail.....that said you still saw it....and I don't see any harm in it....but if you open yourself up expect to reap the reward....
I've always wondered how the bikers got away with that one. Some of the lowrider S10 guys sink their plates into the beds on an angle, but I guess as long as they are illuminated at night and legible they are sort of within the law. But with our hot rods pretty much being on the ragged edge of legality anyways, it probably isn't smart to give the cops one more excuse to pull us over. Don
Is this the troll question of the day? I'd have to ask the officer sitting 20 ft from me right now but I'd bet that it would get most traffic cops or what ever the state patrol is called in any particular state's attention to the point they started looking for some other reason to pull you over. Rather like going out in the cow pasture and waving a red flag in hope that that big one with balls instead of udders doesn't decide to pay much closer attention to you. I'd have to think that the bikers who run them that way on their bikes have bikes that are pretty lean and the plate on it's side down on the left side of the back tire fits the profile of the rest of the bike. And who's to say that they don't catch some flack for it. Other than that I can't think of one polite comment to say about doing something like that and will leave it at that.
I was talking to some bike guys a couple weeks ago about this. Most of them had never been challenged, but one had actually gotten a ticket for it.
No,I can't imagine why anyone would want to have a vertical tag on a car or truck,I understand the idea behind hanging a tag vertical off the side of a bike. I have seen mini trucker canter their tags and it looks like poo! HRP
I ran one on a trailer in OR for years and never got stopped. The regular mount was too low and I got tired of replacing the plate when it got torn off.
Yep, very common here in CA. Typically on a car trailer where there is no other place to put it without damaging it. Bolt it vertically, on left the fender.
It is illegal in North Carolina, and will not pass inspection legally. The plate must be both situated correctly and visible from a 3/4 view from both sides of the bike. I'm betting that there is something in there for cars as well. I'd need to check in the books. But regardless it really wouldn't be something you would want to do on a HAMB friendly car so it's moot.
I would never want the very first thing someone sees when they look at my car is the license plate. And that's exactly what's going to happen if you mount it in any fashion other than "normal". I want people to see "stance", not "WTF is with that guy's license plate?". You only get one chance for that first impression. Why waste it on comments that are quizzical in nature? A normally placed license pate just disappears to the eye allowing the public to view your car instead of focusing on some oddity.
Before you do check with your state laws....riding the bike I had 333 Half Evil build for me I was pulled over and instructed that in Michigan it was illegal to have the plate mounted vertical. The officer was nice, no ticket just a warning. Now my bike was/is registered in Ohio so I'm sure it was his reason to pull me over, but he did say it was illegal and COULD result in being pulled over and cited.
bolt it on backwards and tell the officer when you get stopped that it's actually your front plate, the rear one fell off!!!!
I thought it was $1500, but it's not important. Bottom line is DON'T DO IT! I know the story if anyone is interested. Some Congressman was in his limo coming up from Miami on I-95, and someone on a Sportbike wheelied past the limo at a very high rate of speed. They couldn't get the license plate number because the plate was verticle, the high rate of speed and of course the front wheel pointing at the moon didn't help, and very soon afterwards the law went into effect. I was a licensed bike builder at the time, and very sure that this story is correct. Of course it is not well enforced, and very few law enforcement officers even know the law exists. On a car, you are asking to get hassled.
Why not just put a sign on the back of your car reading, "Good day, officer, Please pull me over and write me a fat citation".
I've seen a number of those and think in those cases most law enforcement folks can figure out the "why" on their own pretty easily. Especially after seeing so many bent up and torn up plates on trailers.
Just do what I saw a car hauler truck doing here when he picked up a car from the neighbor. Mount the plate upside down and backwards, so the painted side faces the front. How that guy got away with it I have no idea.
Perfectly legal. Cops won't harass you for that for that reason. Something where common sense actually applies.
Yep a lot of guys do run them sideways on their bikes. But........ 1) Anyone that I know of that ran it that way got a ticket. 2) Anyone that did do it realized it looked like shit and attracts the cops attention so they put it back the way it should be. 3) It looks like shit. Oh and for the record, the ticket is called "improper display of plate".
