Does any body know of a good restoration place or person and also that they can make a plate also? California 63-69 plate is what I would like and yes I know in some states its "Illegal" to make them but I can see there is a hole lot of Old brand new looking plates out there so somebody is doing it. Any help would be appreciated
Most of the places that make good quality plates don't even make California ones anymore. I have a plate from license plate.tv but they don't make them anymore (they used to not ship to California, but still made the plates). Also if your trying get them past the dmv, you can't as most repo plates are aluminum and they check. If your just replacing a lost plate that's already on the car then your ok.
Try, Custom Plate Professionals, Licenseplates.tv and World License Plates. They all sell custom plates.
There are two things that amaze me. California needs money to build its railroad. First is why don't they accept high quality reproduction plates and second if you have an original plate why won't they let use use a high quality reproduction as the second plate? I am currently looking for a 1931 commercial plate for my '31 RDPU. I want one with the letters "PC" standing for "pnuematic commercial" (versus one with solid rubber tires). I know they would let me use standard 1931 p***enger car plates but I am stubborn. If I could use reproduction plates or just one original and a reproduction I would be sending them money to build the railroad every year. I like to contribute to a good cause (?). Charlie Stephens

Calif DMV is making the Black & Yellow Gold plates (not in the same sequence as before) only you have to get a application That cast $$.$$ and then besides the normal fees there is a yearly Extra fee on top of that. If you have lost one & still have the other Not sure why Calif DMV cant make a new plate for a replacement that has the same letters & numbers plate you all ready have. They certainly would still make Money on that one
I have a '51 "BE" plate on my '54 panel, I had Licenseplate.tv make a new one for me from pictures (so I can keep the real ones safe at home). It's close but I wouldn't run them together, all the fonts are too small (it's all they had).
Your better off waiting for a clear set, the repo plates were a $100 each when they were making them. The black plates are the cheapest to buy out of all the plates, you'll have a $15-20 transfer fee and $10-15 extra a year to run them. Look for odd letter/number configuration so you know they'll be clear. Keep looking for a clear original set, they're out there. Most I've paid is $150 and that was for the '51 commercial which are going for well over $400 now, do your research and you'll find clear cheap plates. If you have one that's registered to your car and you want the front plate you can make one out of fibergl***.....not legal at all but works great.
There's a guy at the Pomona Swap meet with a white trailer that reproduces plates and sells license plate frames.The plates are aluminum. I think he's on row 15, if I remember right. I don't remember he's name and can't find his card. I just moved and I can't find anything right now!
That's pretty funny "white trailer" LOL most everybody had a white trailer that I saw. I was just there this last Oct.15 and walked all rows and asked all that had license plates for sale if they did or could they direct me to any body that could make a plate for me and all I got was "I am sorry sir that's Illegal ! Most all that sold license plates were on the end of the rows I saw. Don't know if the person you are telling me about just happened to Not be there that weekend, that would be my luck LOL. LOL! That's true about the white trailers. I see that guy there all the time. He's also at the BIG 23 in San Diego. He's a black man if that narrows it down. His trailer opens from the side. I'll try to find his card when I start unpacking my junk.
I always wondered if some of the low population back country counties had new old plates stuck away in a back of the courthouse cellar store room where they got stuck at the start of a new year when the new plates came in.
I doubt it. The bulk obsolete plates were too popular for using as shingles for roofs. When you find old plates with a couple of extra holes that look like they were made by nails that is probably what happened. Charlie Stephens

Hello - Over the years, I have restored several plates myself. If they're in decent condition, the repainting is easy, however, highlighting the letters and other contrasting details can be time consuming, butlike so many other tasks we do restoring our cars, well worth the satisfaction. By the way, when I traveled as far east as posssible, I think I saw you in "Jeptha" collecting what "ought be due." Good luck, Brother.
