I had a plate made a few years back which was my original number. The plate was aluminum and that was OK for my purpose. But if they still make in alum. and you want to try to get them through DMV they will reject it if they notice it.
State of my Ky you can run YOM if you have historical plate and registration with you . I have a friend that had a custom '32 plate for his '32 the is HOT ROD , but is a 32 plate
Fuzzy. A friend of mine just finished a red 32 3 window, a truly beautiful car. He took the standard white Cali plate, had it painted black, took it to a pinstripper, and had the numbers and letters done in black. He used some small yellow block stick on letters to spell CALIFORNIA, and clear coated it. You cannot tell from the $40 extra plate....and pays zip. The guy is about 80 years old and never been stopped in any of his 4 hot rods....
Ya know with a little leg work and a dollar 2. 98 you can acquire an original set of Cali black and yellow plates. When I got my Fairlane it had Cali blue plates and looked stupid. Went on Ebay and found a correct sequence series of Black and Yellow plates. 100 bucks, got them OKed by dmv and I was good to go.
Thats pretty much how it works in CT. When I registered mine, it took DMV about an hour to figure out how to get this done even after I filled out the form. To go one step further, they photocopied my plate and when it was all done, they gave me the photocopy. Go and figure.
... I guess we are somewhat lucky in Mich with YOM plates ... I paid a one time fee of $35 years ago for a non-expiring registration ... good for as long as I own it ... (black plates for '35 by the way) ... ... Just have to be sure that you have good VIN numbers stamped on your car that match your registration ... Same restrictions as a historical plate (basically not for daily driver use) ... ... BUT ... for some stupid reason ... Michigan doesn't keep a database for YOM plates ... so you aren't in their computer if the cops run your plate ... (as I found out when I got pulled over for speeding) ... ... The registration IS stamped "non-expiring" ... and I didn't have any problem when the cop saw that ... ... But I did end up getting an "impeding traffic ticket" because I had a good record ... no points ... just a fine of course ...
There is a guy here in SoCal that will take a standard CA white plate, STAMP in "CALIFORNIA" and the correct sticker wells and paint the plate black/yellow, yellow/black, or whatever. They are absolutely spot-on to a state issued plate. http://www.fortech-online.com/
