Thats when cars were cars. Now they just melt plastic and call it a car.

Damn. So that's what metal cars looked like. Awesome pics of days we will never see again. American steel and Americans working on something they were proud of.

    Thanks.

Start making stuff as cool looking and forward thinking today as this was then and they might have a fighting chance. Seriously.

  12. Great pictures. Too bad those panoramic shots are kind of fuzzy. They would make cool wall art.

  16. This looks just like the one I used to own, same color and all.

  17. Thanks for posting that my uncle worked there in that time period . He had ordered a new chevy in 57 and he got to follow the car down the assembly line when it was built.

that is incredible..too bad they want $80 for each print... you have to get a frame ect,ect..
regardless that is stuff I love to see. just awesome!

  19. I've been in that assembly plant before (they were building the old Lumina Vans from the late 80's then-yuk). Every time I visited an old Big 3 assembly plant I always thought about the history of it. It's major cool to see it here.
I remember going into the GM Wilmington Assembly Plant in Delaware and they had a 1948 Pontiac restored out near the assembly line. It had been built there in 47-48 and the line workers had restored it for display.
I was interested to see that the exhaust manifolds on the 235, 283, and 348's were all painted block color, too. Should make for some interesting conversation next time one of us wonder up on one of those 'perfect' restorations and the manifolds are grey or black, huh?:D

  20. Did anyone but me notice the 100% male work force? Times have really changed since '59.
I'm sure that was your car Ol55, cuz I saw my black 2-door post in one of them too.

I was able to find the old Chevy plant in Kansas City where my 55 was built when I was driving thru in 1997. The plant had closed in the 80s and was now being subleased as industrial space, and I got to walk around in it...man, what a huge building!

Look at the pics of the guys painting. Not even a dust mask, let alone respirator!

Wonder how many of these old assembly line painters are still with us?

  23. What I find interesting is that the plant looks exactly like the one I worked at in Baltimore Md in the late 70's right down to the wood block flooring !!

Wow, those are pretty neat. You all might laugh, but I'd kill for those same pics, but from ford as I'm restoring one. Doesn't get much clearer on what was original and what wasn't, there! Thanks for sharing,
