I have plans for one, just have not gotten around to making it yet. I have an old jerry can of the red variety that has a clay smith woodpecker sticker on it that looks like it was put on there in the 70's. it has that "patina" that we have all grown to either love or despise. I have been contemplating using it as a mailbox since I have a wife that LOVES to get magazines/catalogs daily. and the mailman currently has to use a prybar to make all the mail fit. I guess this post is what I needed to get me motivated and get it started. I am curious to see what everyone else has. I'll try and get pics of it up as soon as it is done!

I painted this one and made the flamed "flag". This thing was heavy. It was made from 3/8" thick tubing and plate for the door. Indestructable!!! I had to hang it from my engine crane to paint it.

Here is ours, I bought it from a fellow HAMBer at Rosanky last year or the year before. My HOA hates it and wanted to fine me, I put a stop to that real quick.

I have a generic box. Don't want to draw the attention of car/parts/tool thieves.

I had a nice one until last week. The neighbor lady dropped a gummy life saver and bent down to pick it up and smashed the shit out of my mail box. Her daughter hit it a month before. I told her to tell her husband I would put a bulls eye on the next one so he can knock the shit out of like the rest of his family.

I live in a rural area. The locals like to get liquored up and hit them with bats, blow them up, or just run them down.

(and those are the ones attached to the houses!)

So I don't dare do a fancy one.

I used to use custom painted boxes as give-aways to the promoters at the cars shows that I pinstriped at. They use to love to get them because they would use them as either raffle items or door prizes.

I did have a guy who won one as a door prize and had it knocked off it's post by a local kid with a bat. He called me and I hooked him up with what I called the 'bat-buster box'. It's a standard box set inside a larger rural box and then the air space between the two boxes was filled with Quicrete! He had me paint a bullseye on the approaching side and the other side I lettered '...is that all you got?' He says he finds a broken wood bat in his front yard several times a year and the box is still standing, slightly scuffed, but still standing. He once told me that even his mailman is impressed. We;re waiting to find a metal bat. He said that he'll just start looking for a kid walking arond town with his arms and hands shaking like a cartoon charactor!

I'll see if I can find some pix of that one.

My parents had that problem when I was a kid... ever since, I always had the temptation to put a faux mailbox filled with cement on either side of the real mailbox. Good god, can you imagine hitting that with a baseball bat ... froma moving car?!?! Bwahahahahaha!!!!:D

Now this is real mailbox. Official USPS cast iron box. I found it in a junk yard with the back busted out of it. I made a steel back and mounted it on the side of the house by the back door. The sumbitch still weigh's 75 pounds without the cast iron back.

I am trying to come up with something to put on the bottom front that mimicks the Pick Up Schedule and rules that were originally on there but I am drawing a blank as to what to say.

    that is what I'm thinking...

  24. I don't care what type of mailbox you put up, one of those rolling trashcans that can hold 90lbs. of trash rolling about 60 mph will take it off at the ground.

At least it could 25 years ago.

the problem with the hardcore heavy duty bat proof mailboxes is the snow plow. the plow hits your indestructable mailbox and gets damaged, you get the bill :(
