Saw a LINCOLN Flathead V8 today, not a late 1930's item, looked like something from the 1940's. Left side head had LINLOLN in script cast in it. What was it?
Could be someday. Aside from the one in the song did anyone run these in Hot Rods? Looked like a slightly larger Ford/Mercury Flathead.
As a side note, Chalie Ryan told me," it was'nt real fast out of the hole, but would run at high seed all day long". He still owns it, and brings it around once in a while.........OLDBEET
Saw a blurb on the Charlie Ryan car recently, maybe here on the HAMB. Could swear I read the car has been restored and is still running the original Hot Rod motor, and it's a V12 not a V8.
Ah yes-- the Lincoln 337 Flathead V-8 ran in the 49 - 51 Lincolns and Ford F-7 and F8 trucks (but with solid lifters). The good news: They sound mean, rebuild parts are availble for Kanter, and they make the flathead guys look twice. Also came with a 3 speed OD stick or Hydramatic trans. The bad news: Speed parts are RARE and expensive, and the motor weights a TON.. Seriously- It bent my cherry picker pulling it out. I ran my 49 Lincoln Cosmo for about 4 years with that motor and it never died-- The ****** gave out first.
Thanks for the quick history lesson. I've seen the inside of a late 1920's Lincoln V8 with the fork & blade connecting rods, that engine looked like a real piece of art.
Ford identified the engine as a 8EQ. Manufactured from '49 to '54. (no '54 isn't a misprint; Canada continued manufacturing flathead engines until late 1954) It was used exclusively in F-7, F-8 trucks and Lincoln cars, and it was a monster! (over 700 pounds) This engine can easily be identified by the location of the distributor, which is at the rear, on top of the block, next to the fuel pump and by the external water byp*** tubes. The 8EQ engine displaced 337 Cubic Inches and developed 145 horsepower.
the flathead lincoln weighs in at almost 850pnds.. (now i remember why i p***ed on one not too long ago). it would be a neat motor to put in a hot rod regardless http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-337bigV8.htm
Hi , i´m building a A roadster and have this Lincoln flathead lying around. I will use 32 frame with boxing plates to carry all that weight , lets see how it goes , at least you dont see those everyday... Old picks anyone??? AVG
337 no real speed parts and weight a Ton This intake was off of one.. the 1950 Lincoln one had HYD lifters
Seen a few in old trucks and at farm shows running pumps. Neat old engine, but as said before "Heavy".
I knew a fellow who drove a 49 Lincoln four door to work once in a while. He came off a cloverleaf once with a Camero right on his bumper. When the road straightened out, he floored the Lincoln from about thirty in third gear. He heard the Camero ****ing air, but it didn't go by until the Lincoln was doing 60! Anything you hear about this being a torque monster? Its all true!
Lets see what it will do in 29 roadster... I try it first with the original intake manifold ,but it´s no biggie to improvise new one from tubing / scratch...
hey KID...where in the world would you find parts for that mill? they would break howard hughes! and i must confess, i didn't know ANY flathead had hydrolic lifters. but they are not my expertice. call me POP...or the old FART!
well they say "what you don't know could fill a book" http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_specs-337bigV8.htm
All Caddy flatheads were hydraulic, and I thought Ford and Merc had some too! Could be wrong about the Ford/Merc..... And you can make a LOT of the speed parts yourself, or get a HAMBer to do them
Wow, 3 year old post. As I understand it the 8EL (Lincoln) had hyd tappets where the 8EQ (truck) had solids, or so I read. There's a guy in Oregon that makes stuff for the both the Lincoln V8 and the V12. Bring $$$$, none of it's cheap.
I´m planning to run 337 first with original equipment and when eweryhting else is breaked in with the new car , i start to make my own speedparts for that big´n heavy motor. Intake is cast iron piece that can be made from aluminiun , save veight allso , exthaus manifolds i take out right away , because they don´t fit the 32 framerails. I will make Zoomies to exhale. The engine was already on the ch***is ,and it looked pretty cool to me.
There is guy repopping aluminum intakes and finned heads. Same price any intake configuration he has (3x3, 2x2,2x4,4bbl) http://www.austinrodshop.com/Lincoln_V8.html Nielsen Cams in Utah can regrind your stock and may be able to find some blanks 801.451.7745 Bendstens make a GM ****** adapter for it http://www.transmissionadapters.com/index.htm
