There is a considerable amount of misinformation in the thread from the banned user.

The reason the Futura is so low is that it's built on the prototype (cowbelly) Continental Mark II chassis #1. #2 and #3 went to Hess & Eisinhardt to build two "Cobbled Cars", a coupe and a convertible from 1953 Lincoln Capri sheet-metal. #1 was purchased from the Continental Division for $17,000 by the Lincoln Division. A drop in the bucket to the $250,000 build. It was a fully-functioning chassis that just needed a body.

I had always heard that the Futura was painted blue by Ford Styling before it was used in the movie. I'm told it didn't film well in blue so they had the car quickly painted red for the movie. These photos are from the parking lot outside Barris' shop after he paid Ford $1.00 for it. It wasn't a barn-find.

Those of you that build cars know that the best paint jobs are done without trim. It looks as though someone pried the bumpers away on both sides as the bumper covers the side trim. I think most would agree that the rear quarter trim is still in place as it's rusting steel. If you look at the door and front fender you can see the original white paint under where the trim was. If you work your way around the car you can see that the front bumper has been removed. There's where there are remains of blue paint.

1st paint job in white with trim removed.

2nd paint job in blue with all side trim in place with front bumper removed.

Final paint job, pre-Barris, in red with front bumper in place, leaving blue paint under it, but no red paint.

    Your thoughts?

If you're interested in the Continental Mark II I've created a FB page devoted to historical documentation of the development of the Continental Division and it's upcoming products.
