I've got a line on a complete '48 Linc with the V-12, and this is a complete car, likely needing very little to actually run and drive. How big is the V-12, cubic inches? Had to pay the taxman today, but I think I can swing a deal on this car, despite Uncle Sam lightened my wallet substantially (gotta feed that $14T deficit!!!). Are there many with '41 - '48 Lincolns running the original engine? I do not plan to swap for a more modern engine at all, if I end up with the car. Strengths and weaknesses of the V-12??? Thanks!!!
the 46-48 motors were 292 cubes. basically the motor was considered a turd. it ran hot, burned oil, warped heads, and lasted only about 30k miles between rebuilds. the later motors like you have were supposedly better but I don't know how much. I've only ever seen one running in a stocker and it was a thing of beauty to listen to. i could have stacked champagne gl***es on the air cleaner and heard it fizz
Stregths: Awesome, cool, beyond impressive. Weaknesses: Everything connected with physical reality...expensive parts, not much bang for buck. '48 should be 292...other years ran from 267 to 305 if engine is not original. If engine turns out to be in pretty good runable shape I'd go for it, if serious work is needed do lots of research and thinking. The engine is not big or powerful in terms of car weight.
I think the previous posters said it all.. Coolest flathead ever. No power, doesn't last long, burns oil, heavy. I'm building one to put into my 1950 F1 ;-)
YEP AND YEP ! That's why alot of the where removed and replaced with a modern 331 Cadillac or flathead Ford. 60'
If you do give up on the Lincoln a newer V10 Ford would fill that hole nicely. Or a V12 Jag. Another engine that got replaced a lot.
Love the old flattys but not this one. As stated above there a turd-I also agree with that statement but it is a good attention getter.
Lets not totally piss in this guys punch! Those motors are not complete ****. People in the past just didnt know what to do with them. Check this site out just dont tell them you like customs if they ask your car is all stock. http://forums.aaca.org/ubbthreads.php/forums/15/1/Lincoln_Zephyr search over there. There is killer info about these motors if you know where to look and who to take advice from. They are expensive and they dont make big horsepower for the dollar. Oh wait-go ****in figure people say the same **** about a flathead ford they have all the same problems listed above. Flatheads are bad *** but they have problems and for the money spent will never have the power of a basic SBC Just my 2 cents LTR Dave
I figured it would have similar problems to the Ford V-8 flatties, so that isn't a big surprise. The really cool thing about this particular car is that is all there, and can be made to run with little effort, I'm pretty convinced. Farking tax time, though! That original V-12 looks so damn cool under that long hood! I couldn't believe the car when I saw it! I went to see a different vehicle the guy had, and the big Lincoln really caught my eye! Only Lincoln I've ever owned was a gorgeous '62 Lincoln ragtop...mmmm, baby! Fear not, if I don't end up with the car for whatever reason, I'll let you guys know!
It's going to be a nightmare. You'll regret the day you touched it. Out of my concern for you and your entire family I will volunteer to go take this car far, far away so it cannot ruin your life. This car needs to be quarantined somewhere, luckily my garage is rated as a fallout shelter and should hold back the evil nicely.... Buy it, get it running, drive it like an old man and hope it won't need a rebuild until your kids inherit it.
Here is a place that you will be interested in. Imagine how nice that engine will look with 3 97's sitting on top http://www.austinrodshop.com/Lincoln_V12.html I'm planing on running one out of a '47 along with the trans and rear if the width works out right under my Roadster.
Actually, I did p*** on the car, but only because Uncle Sugar took my %%%$%&-ing money for taxes this year, and I was hoping to dig a couple of bucks up in the meantime...**** happens, I guess. Thanks for the info, guys.
