I have a customer that wants to run a Flathead V12 in his roadster. I have a couple questions. 1. Are there any aftermarket multiple carb intakes for these? 2. How about distributers? I know long shot. Also, where can I find more info? This gent cant/wont research this so I am looking into it for him. TIA
Just get a normal good ol' Ford Flathead V-8 and drill and tap 2 extra spark plug holes in each head, then run dummy wires to it, he'll never know the difference yeah, I know I'm worthless...
My buddy had one in his 37 that ran. He said that there were separate 2 coils or something that controlled the spark on each side of the motor or something wierd like that. They were also prone to getting hot and cracking I guess. Even more so than the V8. That is why you see a lot of lincolns with no motors for sale. Speed equipment is next to impossible to find and very pricey if you do find it. I heard somewhere that someone in Austrailia may be repopping some aluminum intakes for them. Other than that they are just huge heavy motors with small bores that make more talk than horsepower. All of my info is hearsay so take it for what it is worth, not much!
make sure you start with the pre 1941 414 ci monster mill the heads and do all the normal flathead port and relieve have a cam reground and then you are down to the question you asked manifold and ignition you probably all ready figured that out. I've thinking about building one for along time
The distributor is a good one, but complicated piece once commonly converted for racing flathead eights. It'll just need tuneup (with expensive parts!), careful setup, and an expensive specialist rebuild of the double coil. Check this guy: http://www.angelfire.com/co/flatheads/products.html He makes Lincoln speed stuff.
Not anymore, but back in the day there was speed equipment for them. It's hard to find and 'spensive if you can find it now. It would be cool, although they weren't the best engine. That's why lots of those old lincolns had OHV caddys put in them in the early 50's.
I agree with Bruce on the cost of the ignitions. I've bought a few over the last couple years, and they don't give the good parts away. Nobody I've found has a stock of parts for them, so watch Hemmings and Ebay. On the intake, I think I heard that the Austin guy who does intakes for Arduns will also do V-12's. Call and see if it's him: Ken Austin P.O. Box 111 Newberg, OR 97132 (503) 537-2700 Hey, another idea... Get one of the V-angle distributor drives that the guy Bruce linked has. Put two 6-cylinder dizzys in it. Probably end up being more expensive than a rebuilt stocker, but way cooler. - alchemy
a guy here in ND, had a zyphyr 4door done complete running driving nice stocker, they lowered it, put AC in it and painted it, thats all, but he had fancy aftermarket heads and a multi carb intake on it, but i remember him saying that hey payed a outragous amount of money for them, and that there were very few ever made. I know it dosent help, but this stuff is scarce. i think finding offy(banger) stuff would be easier
I think the 414 engine referred to above is not part of this line, which ran to about 100 cubes+ less--that's the engine from the luxury series Lincolns, the big K models, completely unrelated to Ford and the Zephyr based Lincolns. The luxury cars were huge, almost truck-like vehicles descended from the big classics of the early thirties. They were poor sellers and were dropped in '40. All Lincolns after that were essentially based on the middle-class Zephyrs, even though that name disappeared.
Best bet might be to get hold of 4ever4banger (I think thats his handle) Greg works for Pioneer who are owned by Garth Hogan and his old man made stuff for those motors down here. If that don't work drop me a PM and I can try to raise him.
Cool, I will follow these leads. He is kinda into this mill, it is a strange vintage/roadrace track T.
Don't forget Rod Hadfield at Castlemaine Rod Shop He built this... There's a lot of custom stuff that they built to get the blower and tri-carb setup happening. I've heard he's in the US at the moment. Maybe you'll bump in to him.
there is a guy in san jose,ca that has a foundry and he loves lincolns. So he made finned aluminum heads and 3x2 cast aluminum intakes. he also was casting the slingshots for ford flatties. the ford stuff was for Orosco I think. But the lincoln stuff was cuz he wanted to. last time I was there he had piles of heads and intakes. I don't know how much they were selling for but it would be worth finding out He is a real nice guy, and know alot about lincolns. His name is John Scobel, pm me if you want a #. I don't want to put it on the internet unless he wants it out there.
Howdy, I'm new to the site and came across an old posting of yours. I'm in Vallejo Ca. and just purchased a 37 Zephyr I plan to rod out. I'm writting in regards to John Scobel in San Jose. I'm trying to locate some V-12 parts and was wondering if he was still around. Any help would be much appreciated. James
Alright heres the deal Im building a 38 coupe and have spent alot of time networking and researching the lincoln zephyr speed parts in question. I got an edmunds dual intake NOS off "the auction site" for around $300 it was listed as flathead ford those deals dont up to often but heres the deal kearny foundry in San Jose has the finned v12 heads $3500 a pair ouch!!!! A guy in texas advertises in hemmings has similar finned v12 heads also $3500 and he's aparently hard to deal with cash up front all kinds of wierd dealings not my drama though. I got a lead on a guy in oregon casting 2-2 barells ,3-2 barrels and 4-2's and blower manifolds if any body wants his contact info pm me! The real deal is Norman Frick in colorado he'll make 2 piece billet aluminum heads finned for $1500 his flathead ford heads are like jewelry!!!! I got two guys plus myself that want heads any body else interested I might get the price to drop with more heads. LTR Dave
Each to his own Tman and he is a customer, but it is a very strange choice for a roadrace/trackT! Ah well, good luck on the hunt because they do look purty when all dressed up. There was a nice one in that two tone Zephyr custom that sold at BJ for $300K or so a couple of years back.
Hey check out this link http://www.angelfire.com/co/flatheads/products.html He's the guy doing the zephyr heads for me and some buddies within 2 weeks Im sending him 50% cash up front to do a run of heads he used to do em for $1200 but that was back in the 90's now they are $1500 Im trying to get the price down so the price is up in the air right now but were working it out it should come down a bit the more we do. If anyone is interested let me know. Dave PS v12's are not the boat anchors people think they are. With dual carbs, better ignition "ignition being the biggest problem with any flathead". Some minor porting, and a little higher compression they work alot better than stock just like any flathead its really not all that different.!
I'd love to see the dyno on that engine. I can still remember being 13 years old at some show with my dad and we were looking at a 40s Continental with the v-12. I said, wow dad that looks like a cool engine. He said, "yeah, until you are behind one on a hill". I see posts every now and again asking about speed equipment for these engines. I saw this on eBay and with 5 days left the bidding is over 1800.00. That includes the carbs and air cleaners but it gives you an idea of how expensive stuff is for the Lincoln flathead. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...viewitem=&item=190184487595&_trksid=p3907.m29
Lucky for Ford, the Lincoln V12 was made long before anybody ever heard of class action lawsuits. I parted out a 48 Continental convertible a few years ago (still have the engine). It belonged to my uncle and I remember riding in it as a kid. Seems like it took a week and a half to get up to highway speeds. I found a box of old Lincoln Continental Owners Club newsletters dating back to the early fifties in the trunk (still have them too). In those magazine-type newsletters are all kinds of stories about how crappy the V12's were. And there were even how to articles about swapping in Caddy, Olds, Chrysler hemis and even flathead Ford and Merc mills. And these were restorers!
I've heard people refer to the Lincoln V-12 as having been based on the Ford V8-60 engine. I can't confirm this, but some have claimed that the pistons interchange. Dave http://www.roadsters.com/
empire motors does intakes. used to do heads, but they're not on the website. http://www.empiremotorsinc.com/Car-Manifolds.htm pic from the web of a 3 carber w/late distributor, maybe a jag.
