Saw him at Shephards Bush Empire - one of the best gigs I have ever been to

  4. First intentional (because the producer decided to keep it that way rather than fix it) guitar distortion recording was Marty Robins' "Don't Worry Bout Me"....go to 1:35...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCbIAmy6X0M

Hey, I played support that night with my band "the rough diamonds"! Got to hang with him backstage and have him play & sign my home-made guitar. He was 63 going on 21 the minute he walked on stage and blew everyone away. The ace records birthday party if I remember rightly, with Tom Ingram on decks. A night I shall treasure the memory of.
    Paul.

"Rocket 88" (1951) features one of the first examples of distortion, or fuzz guitar, ever recorded, played by the band's guitarist Willie Kizart. The legend of how the sound came about says that Kizart's amplifier was damaged on Highway 61 when the band was driving from Mississippi to Memphis, Tennessee. An attempt was made to hold the cone in place by stuffing the amplifier with wadded newspapers, which unintentionally created a distorted sound; Phillips liked the sound and used it.

When Robbins was recording his 1961 hit "Don't Worry", session guitarist Grady Martin accidentally created the electric guitar "fuzz" effect — his guitar was run through a faulty channel in a mixing console. Marty decided to keep it in the final version.

In the early '60's they played at a frat house in our town and a friend stole a quart of gin there and we drank it on the side lawn, I still can remember laying there hearing "run chicken run" over and over. Never been so sick in my life and still can't get that tune out of my head.

Glad I got to see Link play, it was loud and punk rock as hell.

Live at the Paradiso is pretty good too.

Don't know if it ever made it to CD, kinda doubt it.

Too bad they don't try to cut the other racer off now a days and then get in a fist fight after like they apparently use to. Would be kind of like Ultimate Drag Racing. Of course that was easier to do when it took about a minute and half to get to the finish line with cars that couldn't even smoke the skinny tires off the line.

Wow didn't realise that Paul ,the support was excellent but I will never forget Link walking out on the stage in the darkness in a single spot light - made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up ! When it finished we waited out front while my mate got the car a black lowered 51 merc 2 door and seven of us piled in we drove home on the bump stops !
