Customs List of 1949 - 1951 Mercury reproduction parts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Pro Stock John, Dec 4, 2008.

  1. I don't think I've seen a thread in the several hundred searches I've run on the HAMB, with a list of all the parts being repop'd.

I'll start, here is what I've heard:

    Rockers: Mercuryland, $650
    49-50 Quarters: Mercuryland, $900
Rear Gl***: Have seen on eBay
    Rubber around gl***: Mercuryland
    Hood rubber stops: Mercuryland
    Sill plates: Mercuryland

    What else!!!

  2. I finally got one of the Mercuryland catalogs in the mail, they have a lot of stuff for the Mercs, had no idea.

I guess just call the thread "call Mercuryland!" :D

Green Mountain repops NICE rockers when he wants to under MikeStude on ebay, MUCH cheaper than MLs price. ML does offer slip on rockers cheaper, but they are prolly junk.

Mercland also stocks steel quarters, but they don't make them. I forgot who does, but they have been on ebay a few yrs ago around $750 a side. I think going price direct from the factory was $800. I saw them advertised in RnC or something around '04 or '05.

Rubber goods I believe I bought from Cl***ic Mercury Parts, cheaper than Mercuryland.

  4. Hehe that was not my intent, maybe nobody responded to the thread because they thought I was shilling for them. :)

I do have one last resto question. So what do the chopped folks do, buy a big ol' roll of window weather stripping, and just pie cut and shape it, or do they buy a set of the stock stuff and modify that? I need to buy the rubbers for the front and side windows.

    Hey,

Doesn't Steele Products (I'm guessin on the spelling of their name) make rubber parts for these? If Mercs & Shoes share the same rubber designs, the gaskets should be available from Ford sources, no?
I've never seen any aftermarket sheetmetal for the Mercury that was LKQ with OEM!

Is anyone else kinda shocked at how little is availible for the 49-51 Mercs? You would think there would be patch panels for the lower forward section of the quarters, that's where both of mine are rotted out, but I don't know of any. Not everyone wants to drop $1600 on a new pair of quarters, and those only fit 49-50.

No front fender doglegs as far as I know, does anyone make a tail pan? I realize that the 49-50 grille shell would be a somewhat complicated stamping to make, but you could probably sell thousands. I wish someone like EMS would jump in and make some of this ****, they'd sell a ton of it.

What about steel skirts? Anyone making those? I've seen the fibergl*** ones but no thanks. I bet a stamping of the 49-50 rear window opening would do well too, seeing as the gl*** and rubber is being reproduced. Not sure about the trim though.

I have a dream, a dream of a world where 50 grille shells could be cut up with reckless abandon, and all 51's could be treated to an oval rear window. Where patching up a quarter panel didn't mean a cost of $1600. Does anyone share my dream?

Ive shared the dream for awhile now. I said this one other time on The HAMB, 49-51 Mercs oughta be like tri year Chevies, you should be able to build them brand new with aftermarket parts. Doesnt look like they share the same popularity however...

I got my front window rubber moulding from Mr. Merc., meaning now Mercuryland. I don't think generic would work, especially if you have the stainless trim that fits on the front rubber.

The wing windows and swing out rear quarter windows are special moulded shapes of course.

I thought Mr. Steele was chevy only?

it is because they don't make those fender pieces in patch panels that got me into metalworking, welding and grinding. I am kinda thankful, but kinda pissed too.

If the front fender lower dog legs would be repopped, I could have three front clips ready to go...

  12. And the tail pan too. I told Joel from Mercuryland, but it sounds like the guy makes the rockers is the guy who needs to be told.

A complete tail pan would be an expensive panel to tool for. Patch panels would probably sell, though. There is not alot of shape in the tail pan excepting the spare well.

Most of the shapes of the grill shell opening start from a slip roll forming procedure, then opened up and pie cut.

Didn't the guy doin' the rockers that actually fit quit making them? A lot of hand work to do these well, and probably tough to get the money for time spent on them.

You're describing a trunk pan. A tail pan is the panel directly below the trunk lid and above the rear bumper. It's a piece on the outside of the car, between the tail lights.

The tail pan on my '50 is wasted, both the 50 and the 51's lower rear quarters could be fixed with a forward section rear quarter panel patch piece. My '50 doesn't have a front clip yet (although I have one lined up that hopefully will work out) and the 51 needs a p***enger lower dog leg.

Sure, I can make all that ****, but it ****s having 300 hours spent on rust repair, makes a guy burnt out before any of the fun stuff gets started.

Both of mine will most likely sit for a few years until I work through a bunch of other projects, so hopefully by then some of these pieces will become availible.

I've wondered why there are so many same year shoebox parts but not Mercury parts for almost 10 years now since I've needed most of them. If I had the capacity and the facility, I would be cranking them out...but by now, I would think demand would be dwindling.

I don't know if demand would be dwindling, seems to me guys are taking on rougher and rougher Merc projects as the good bodies have already been taken. Plus a lot of previously finished cars are getting redone and I bet a lot of poorly repaired tail panels and fenders/quarters would recieve new steel if it was availible.

And those grille shells would sell by the ton not just to Merc guys but for all sorts of 50's custom cars.

I could be wrong, but I personally think the market for stuff like that is as strong as ever.

  18. I think the lack of patch panels makes the resto of one even more daunting. Look at the tri 5's and the shoeboxes for example.

My tail pan was wasted too. Part of the problem is that a number of the parts re-sellers like Mercuryland don't have online directories so they hurt themselves by not attracting more customers.

BTW, this is the rubber I had around windows, does this look like stock? I think I'm going to source another role of this to just get the car done:

It's a bit more than that, you have to alter all the channels , which are usually shot anyway , install new gl*** channels, wipers ( wiskers ) re-set everything (you don't screw with the back window, that's the only thing you can get a new gasket for and just re-set it)
It's a lot of work, I'll bet a good 25 to 30 hours total , for me anyway.

Here is something you are just not going to beleive.
We have an old gl*** shop about 5 mins. from my shop, "the cheapest gl*** shop in the world", he's kind of excentric but you put up with it.
I made up templates for the rear quarter windows & took the to him. He cut new gl*** ( green tint) to fit, ground & polished all the edges ( two pcs.) and my TOTAL bill was $13.88 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I told him, man that ain't enough, he told me "Ah hell I wouldn't been doing anything anyway, I just charged ya what the gl*** cost me."

You would think that someone could make money selling grill shells. Piece of **** ones are going for $300.00 and good ones are $500 plus and like others have said it's not just merc guys that want them.

The 49 Merc has a different size opening for the flow through ventilation than the50 or 51. They will fit though.
