I'm hoping to catch the round up! For everyone else, we have a huge weekly show at PIR that pretty much anyone can attend, and starting in June, there's something nearly every night and weekend. It's nice to change it up a bit and see rides from like minded people. If I could get my 53 out of the garage she'd fit right in, but I'm gonna have to wait til next year. Too much metal work to do... Thanks for putting the show on, hope you have a good event!

I think the way the first post reads or implies is:
"We are hard core as fuck and this is the way it is."

I'm not sure that is your intent though. But that is how it comes off.

Is this how it's advertised or is this a reminder poster that gets taped at the table of the entry gate to remind your volunteers?

I'd consider going because I'm sure there will be lots of cars I'm interested in. I doubt I would "fit in" really well to the hard core atmosphere though.....

Kinda like the Goodguys Show in Pleasanton I just drove 550 miles to over the weekend. I had a good time and look forward to Puyallup in a couple months, even though I don't quite fit the gold chained crowd either.

I'm only a 100 miles south, hopefully I'll make it up there in the next couple years.

Here is how the poster reads

The rules are to hang up at the gate so that when the 20 or so cars that pull up every year and want to argue about their car getting rejected have a pont of reference. It makes it much easier on our volunteers wirking the gate to point at a rule hanging rather than fight and argue with the guy wanting to bring a car that doesn't fit into the show.

I think if the fliers have that language on them then the rules poster just reinforces that at the gate and you probably will be fine.

If the poster doesn't have that on there then people might be alot more upset.

I do like the idea of having it posted at the gate to take some of the heat that the volunteers will endure.

  6. Not that I am anywhere near Portland, but most fiberglass, does that mean T-Buckets,coupes,roadsters...fenders.

Volunteers at the gate know the difference?,,what's most mean? HRP

  9. Its your show, run it how you see fit. You will NEVER please everyone.

If I lived up there, I'd go to the show to look, but doubtful I would put any car in. I build cars the way I want, and dont care to be "rejected" at the gate because some guy doesnt want a certain part on MY car.

However, I still stand behind my comment of its your show, run it how you want.

  10. Why stir up a shit storm of drama around this show? I've been to the round-up the past couple of years, and didn't see much there that obviously didn't belong. There was a range from stock-appearing 50s sedans with doo-wop song titles painted on the continental kit to some pretty nasty looking cars that had been chopped with a gas axe and stitched back together with a torch and coat hangers. In between, there are always a bunch of HAMB friendly cars. Come early, stay late...just save the drama for reality TV.

It would be really nice to go to a show and not have to look at red fiberglass 32 fords with efi crate motors, tweed interiors and torque thrust wheels over and over and over.......

This isn't supposed to create drama. These rules have always been in play for the last 7 years of doing the show. Every year without fail we turn away at least 20 or so cars most of which the owners complain that these rules aren't posted anywhere. So this year we figured we'd save the fighting and arguing over the qualification and just post them.

There are a lot of fiberglass survivors. People forget that fiberglass was around in the 50s and 60s.

There is a difference between that and a fiberglass kit car however which is why we had to make a clarification and say most.

  15. The rules are clearly stated on your website. I don't understand people that would intentionally bring a vehicle that doesn't fit the criteria. Because their pastel colored Prius is just SO bitchen' it transcends all categories. I suppose anymore if you were to hold a dog show, you would have to turn away cats at the door.

I can't begin to tell you how many high clad Billet cars can't understand why the unfinished primer car in front of them got in, but they didn't. Or the guy with the supped up mustang yelling at us for cutting the years off at 64. So many arguments at the gate. Just watch the strip in front of Jubitz as people burn off yelling. I always think it's funny. We tell them that they are more than welcome as spectators, but that their car doesn't fit the criteria. Believe me the sign will come in handy

Enforce the rules. Forget the whine & cheese crew, its YOUR show hence criteria. Good luck to nice week end. Meanwhile the 'hug-fest/we all car guys' can go on down to 'cruise' night w/Bruce Jenner in a wet T-shirt posing beside a '90's Street Rod of The Year updated w/edgy faux 'patina'. Show promotors Geritol & Viagra will be kicking in a 'goodie bag' for those with a need fer speed.

  18. Those are the same guys who go to a show with their 2015 Camaro and open the hood, like they built their own engine.

You should put some of your rules listed in your O/P on the flyer under "pre 64 traditional Hot Rods and Kustoms". You might only have 10 people to argue with. In addition to posting the rules at the gate, you might consider posting some "yes" and "no" photo examples of cars. Go on the net and print some color photos of traditional Rods and Kustoms as well as 80's billet builds; monochrome paint with water splash graphics and tweed interiors. It would be easy work to point to the "no" column of photos and tell a driver his car has more No traits than Yes traits.
Offer preferred parking near the gate for non event special interest cars so they can enter as spectators w/o feeling they were completely booted. Walking the show may "sell" them into building a traditional car. . LA Roadster show successfully does this.

  21. Probably should...this is a hot rod show, not a concours show. My cat has 4 legs, a tail, and is the same age as your dog. Can he come to your dog show?

Looking at the web site, there could definitely be some clarification to the likes and dislikes. Instead of saying “Things we dislike:” – Call it “Entry Criteria”

Also add as much clarification to ALL your posters and advertisements that this is a pre-65 traditional hot rod show. This should be the first thing people see and think about when they think of this show.

Start with the easy stuff. Make it clear that you are trying to gather “period correct and period styled traditional hot rods and customs” for the show. Make it clear that it is not an open show and that “any vehicle that looks non-traditional will not be allowed.”

Other easy stuff would be to say “No vehicles newer than 1964”. That should make it clear for the donks, tuners, all the Mustangs, and all the new and old muscle cars.

If you don’t want (what we here on the HAMB should call) rat rods showing up; say “No fenderless vehicles allowed newer than 1934”. That takes care of most of them. You can continue to say “No overly ornate, art cars, themed cars, or shock rods allowed”

You used to be able to say “no street rods allowed” but these days there are lots of traditional hot rods that are every bit as comfortable and appointed as street rods and people are un-street rodding street rods to make them look more traditional but keeping the efi and AC hidden.

Instead of saying “Billet of almost any form”, say “No visible billet allowed such as wheels, steering wheels, air cleaners, valve covers, etc.” Continue to say “If your billet can be covered by closing the hood and the rest of the vehicle looks traditional, please keep the hood closed.”

The visible billet rule should take care of the “Boyd wheels or any like them” but you can clarify and even quantify this rule by saying “no aftermarket wheels larger than 15” allowed”. You can also say “Only aftermarket wheels allowed are cast aluminum or steel, no billet aluminum”

“Most Fiberglass” – This is a rule most people have a problem with because they don’t understand that you are really just trying to keep out the standard ’32 “kit cars” and the wilder T-bucket or other street rods that have huge wheels and an exaggerated rake or that have super-wide pro-street tires and 2’ tall tunnel rams. I would rather see a stock looking fiberglass body on a car that is done in a tasteful way, with the right (narrow) steel wheels, tires, and a good stance than a steel bodied ’32 that has EFI and IFS up the OMG. If the rest of your entry criteria are written correct, you shouldn’t need to address fiberglass bodies. You might want to say somewhere “no wide-tire 70’s style t-buckets” and maybe “no IFS on fenderless cars”.

Instead of saying “80's/90's Graphic style paint jobs” – You could say “no European-style monochrome paint jobs and no wild 90s-style graphics. Only traditional style flames, scallops, and panels allowed.”

“Trailer Queens” – As much as trailered cars are hated, this is probably the hardest rule to enforce because people will simply unload somewhere else and drive in like they made the whole trip. It’s easier to make it known on ALL your posters and advertisements that this show is for people who drive their cars and that trailered cars get no respect and are not welcomed. But people will still lie.

All in all, the most important thing is to advertise the intent of your show on all your posters and stuff. If it’s been 8 years, everyone should know by now that this is a hot rod show and not a new Camaro show.

These are good changes! I'll keep that in mind for next year's poster. Easy to change the website. Thanks for the feedback.

The Round Up was great and packed as usual. Its refreshing to walk a show where almost every car is one I stop to look at instead of wading through a show searching for a traditional build.

Does my candy apple red 1959 Chevy 4 door sedan with baby moon hubcaps, chrome skirts and a NOS 8 track player meet your criteria? Hate to drive all the way from the Midwest, and get turned away.
