Von Dutch is the only striper I have dealt with. In '68 I was working at Muntz on Roscoe in the S.F.V. Ca. and Jim Muntz[Earls son] was into racing go-karts and wanted Von Dutch to do the paint and striping on his. I had been up to Von Dutch's place several times for the kart and he was working on a '55 Chevy that some guy owned and kept telling him how to stripe it - Well, the next time I went up there was about 3 wks. later and he had painted hundreds and hundreds of flies all over the dash and window trim[you could almost hear the buzzing] - he said that the guy just kept bugging the hell out of him and telling him he was doing it wrong - But the kart came out just perfect. But to see the '55 owners face would have been priceless

The standard heroes you asked us not to note (though many did),

    Tommy the Greek
    Larry Watson.

    and a guy not mentioned:

Larry Lee, had a custom shop on Green St. in Pasadena, CA in the late '50's, early '60's, did striping, surf t-shirts, custom work (watched him french Packard lites into a Plymouth), and built a '29 A sedan with a blown Chrysler for the street, complete with parachute...anyone else remember him, or know what happened to him?

Larry Lee is still around SoCal. I remember when he had a place on PCH in Newport Beach, back in the 60's. If you watch the Indy time trials ,you'll probably see on some of the drivers helmets,"Troy Lee Designs" that's Larrys' son. The apple did'nt fall far from the tree!

When I was starting to do striping ,the three guys that influenced me the most were Tom Kelly , Dennis Jones and Chuck Babbitt aka "shakey Jake" . Jakes gone ,but Kelly and Jones have since become very good friends of mine.

  18. "Gator" Mike Gaydos got me into striping and is a legend in my book. I am proud to call him freind and own a car he had a hand in customizing many years ago. Great to see his name on here. He never toots his own horn and is happiest when he see's the smile on anyone that enjoys what he does.

David Hightower and Tramp Warner are two of the very best in the country.

David Hightowers work is in some of the most expensive art gallery's in the country and sells for thousands of dollars.

There have been many great stripers over the years and many of them were known for different things such as their design work or images of pin up girls and stuff like that. Some pull staight lines others hate straight lines and don't like doing that kind of work. Other like doing anything with cartoon caractors or animals. Each one is good in their own right.

Not to many still hit the road every year and follow the car shows because of the costs involved with being a vendor.

Jake Hudson was doing it for years but I don't know if Jake still hits the road every year and follows the NSRA events or not.

Many of the bigger shows charge between $1,800 and $2.500 dollars for four days and that is just the cost for your spot with no traveling expenses figured in.

Your dad was a good friend and influence in my early years of striping . In my office I have a print of him striping a tricycle that Joy gave me after he passed , it's always been one of my favorites. Still miss him to this day !

The only guy I know and saw work was a local guy here around Vegas by the name of Jake Hudson, been doing it for over 40 years and is smooth!
