Ouch, shim the axle to spiders and weld them together and make it a spool

    One with 4 spider gears.

A 2 spider 9" will just do the same thing.

Some type of limited slip or locker would be a good idea. The one-wheel burnouts overload the spider gears.

It never really smoked the tires, just hooked and took off. Until the ring and pinion or spiders let loose. Yeah well these things happen. Already got the spare pumpkin in,just gonna have to keep my foot out of it till i find a rear that'll hold up better.

Looks like you just need a posi to prevent the breakage. The stock posi is 4 pinion and has no slop if it has Belleville plates.

My brother has a 62 Impala with a 468 in it and he has the factory rear end in it. He keeps a few extra third members around too...
I think hes on number four, so i broke down and gave him my 9" out pf a galaxy! Next winter project...

what 2 words are ALWAYS spoken right before a 55-64 pumkin explodes?

    "Watch this!"

  20. I would have upgraded after # 2, :) no way the third one would have been the same.

    Three words: "Hold my beer!"

Maybe it just needs less tire? ;)

Oh yeah, they pop like penny candy in the stock form when put to abuse. Especially if they haven't been gone through in decades.

That was my initial thought... although welding 90-weight makes me queasy at times.

I had an '09 in a '62 Impala in the 70's that would do that. After I was told that both wheels were wobbling I pulled the axles and both had about a half round of twist. Than car kept me broke buying trannys and diffs
