I have had very good luck cleaning out the housing with dish washing liquid and water, shim the void between the carrier and spider gear and weld them to the carrier, then weld the axle gears to the spiders. Granted this ruins the carrier but only if it fails again. But that's when you buy a real locker. So far I haven't had to buy a locker.
I have welded few dana 60s and even some dana 44s Over they year.
I was asked to weld a 700r4 first gear onto first gear of a turbo 350 in a 550 hp 1970 chevell drag car 3 years now he has been pulling the front tires on that weld.

And the first sentence on the phone afterwards is "can you come tow me".

I'm sure you did but anytime you get pieces that small you need to clean out the housing real good or the next failure will be bearings from the stuff circulating in the gear oil. Messy job but necessary.

  8. two brothers that I went to high school with in the 50's both had fords. one with a built flat head and the other with a bad ass 283 vette motor. both ran stock running gears. the flat motor car went thru axles, transmissions and rear ends, the vette car never broke a thing. they both said as long as you can break the tires loose you won't break parts.

my suggestion to you is a bigger motor or skinnier tires:D

    Chevy motors=good
    chevy rear axles=bad

I fried the spiders in a giant 1966, 9 and 3/8ths Lincoln rear end, doing a "one wheel" burnout. The spider teeth got caught between the ring and pinion and the axle shafts got so damned hot they bonded to the inside of the spiders!
Had to use a 15 foot 3/8ths chain bolted to the axle studs to whip the axle shafts out of the rear end. Took 1/2 day per side...what a bitch that was!

Time for a Positraction unit, the new EATON's are far better than the original DANA's, and to do a little shopping at BruneauPerformance.Ca (Canadian site). He makes upgrade kits for the 55-64 rears and housings, along with cap straps, bearing conversion kits, and axles. Butch/56sedandelivery.
