Was there any instructions with the new one ? Maybe it can be adjusted to advance or retard,,,,you never know . Tommy
I'll have to look in the box. If so that will be a huge help! **Update** Looked in the shipping box it arrived in, and no installation guide was sent with it, only a receipt. Totally ****s!!
A few more pictures. The vacuum advance is in two parts, the plate that holds distributor to block with a bolt, and a clamp going from vacuum diaphragm over to distributor body. Notice the main plate is marked and block has a scribed line. Third picture explains how to install distributor. You want the vacuum clamped to distributor tightly and installed so that marks line up (plate to block)...first picture I just took with endoscope. Second picture shows proper installation. Engine off, you want diaphragm all the way out as shown, so with vacuum it pulls in. Set initial timing with vacuum line off. Any vacuum will advance timing which you don't want (yet!). Hold-down bolt hand right so you can move distributor. Set at TDC. Now engine off, vacuum line back on, read specs I posted before. It should advance just a little (factory says 1 degree...low idle). Then watch timing as you slowly rev up to 1800 rpm which should be 20 degrees advance. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
Here's an explanation of how vacuum advance works. It's generic, so it shows a V8 that turns opposite direction from yours. Notice it goes to ported vacuum which is above carburetor throttle plate. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
Ok, so the "scribed line" is lined up where in respect to the plate ?? currently I have it set to A and tightened. I know thats not correct, but it had t be set somewhere to keep it running, so .... Once I line the "scribed line" with the correct marking on the plate, what next? (I know the vacuum has to unplugged so will do that first.)
ok maybe this online manual will help. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/06engine/6_028.HTM
Look back at my post #27. That's how you want it, good clearance as shown. Motor off you want vacuum lever all the way out. Distributor installed you should be able to grab the distributor body and rotate it counterclockwise almost an inch. As I said, vacuum moveable lever is clamped tight to distributor body, then everything is held down to block...bolt holds it in place. That plate has marks, the block has one mark, a line going over. after checking receipt and removing new unit compared side to side with old unit, I discovered it's most likely to be wrong model. So I have re-installed the old unit, having opened it up and revealed gunk built up inside, cleaned it out put end cap back on and re-installed and guess what?! It's working again!! (WOOHOO!!) Anyway, I appreciate everybody helping me out, I'm just glad to have it running correctly again and able to drive more than 15 - 20 mph. BTW - selling new unit, since it doesn't work for my truck, I believe it may be automobile unit as it goes backwards instead of counterclockwise. I could be wrong, but either way, won't work on my truck so, I don't need it. Thanks again all.
I always remember what one teacher said when my wife and I took auto mechanics in the 70s. Any distributor looking from top down whichever way vacuum advance is mounted, it "points" to direction rotor turns. Sent from my SM-S320VL using Tapatalk
