The building would make you dizzy if you looked at it to long.
Sure hope it looks great on the inside.

Ok, Cars was cute at the movies and the ride at California Adventure is the best one there, but I guess I am just holding on to the past and like the Peterson the way it was.
But as a business, as it really is, one must move forward to entice new people to: come, enjoy and buy things from the store, and support the museum. And maybe I am resisting because of pre-hype of 'brass cars" that would fill up the empty space when the dioramas (the best part of the 'old' Peterson) were removed. And hearing about what was sold from the collection "extras and spares" I hope it has not become a shell like Harris's in Reno.
And finally/hopefully we shouldn't judge a book/museum by its cover, because it is ugly to me.
I hope that the Peterson remains the auto-museum that sets the standard for the rest.

  6. Since I'm a teacher and I used to work in a science museum, I love the interactive childrens' area. Great job.

What hippie on drugs designed that building? Geez, a whole lot going on outside there, not very attractive to me. Looks like a steel yard exploded or something. Looks more like some kind of modern art museum than an auto museum. Maybe they are trying to attract the yuppie crowd?

I would love to check out the historic rods and customs. Great they are being preserved for future generations, sad they are no longer doing what they were built to do, ride the highways...

No new owners, just some changes in management.

Thanks for sharing. I will get my group together for a visit. I have been following Peter's ideas for over a year when the design was originated for the exterior. I am not a fan but you can't miss it and it has people talking. Marketing 101!

Thanks for the pics, looks like they got the same building designer that did the music experience in Seattle!

When I first looked at the building(?), I was wondering how they kept the cars on the track? Thanks Bomber

Ugly, really ugly on the outside. It's so ugly that I don't even want to see it in person.

Was there in 1997 when we went on the Hot Rod Power Tour to Detroit, had the send off party there.
One of those things you do once so you can say you've done it, but wouldn't go back to L.A. just for that.
I don't think they had car people in mind when they designed the remodel.

Having been to the Peterson Museum twice before I hope there has been a major effort to produce displays that encourages the guest to stop and appreciate the cars in their native habitat. That is was a museum is supposed to do. Let's hope the Peterson Museum gets it right this time.

I realize museums need to change to attract repeat visitors, but I'll never forgive them for removing the dioramas. I can see cars at shows, but the old garages, gas station, market etc they used to have let you sink back in time for a while. Now its all bright lights and polish.

  20. Lots of cars that don't interest me, but I'd still like to see it. Surely by now someone has gone by and tipped the spots on the Hirohata back down where they belong. ;)

The old street was the best part...the alley with the 34 parked gave me the chills. Bummer that's not there...I was hoping they would keep it.

Hey Jay, are you gonna be in town for GNRS? If so you can give us the $5.00 tour. OK?

Far too sterile for my taste, everything is shades of white except for the cars... thankfully the cars add some color!
The outside made me motion sick just looking at it.
I wish them the best, I just don't get it inside or out.
The Petersen museum was on my bucket list, they just "kicked" the bucket!

I think the architect saw Watsons Grapevine and did his version to the building. Not to everyone's taste, but I dig it. We still have dioramas here in Cincy at The American Sign Museum housed in a box shaped building.

  27. I'm sure I read somewhere, that the outside was designed to represent, speed. Guess if people get motion sick, looking at it, then its working. :D

My five year old flatmate is nuts on Cars, so that area would be cool to see.

I've been once, about 9 years ago, and I might be going back in March. Who gives a shit about what it looks like on the outside? I just hope Bob's parking spot is still "reserved" in the ramp, as it should be.

Surprised to see an "Ugly" comment on the building. It is surely not the usual, thank god. But I salute the aggressive design. The interactive gallery sounds brilliant. Will be visiting if I get to L.A. Thanx for the report.

Kinda cool, definately evokes a strong reaction, that I'm sure was the architects intent.
Looks like that time my dog ate a bag of Brachs Star Brite Peppermint Mints!........Funniest thing, didn't skink at all.
