Lizard skin is more expensive than bedliner, and likely has better insulative qualities... but by how much? Does the extra expense justify using it instead of bedliner on our underbodies and interiors? Quantify it for me, folks. Let the debate begin! ~Jason
A lizard skin substitute is discussed started with post #94 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51399&showall=1 happy reading... I don't know of anyone that has mixed microspheres with bedliner. Maybe you should give it a shot and let us know how it works.
Read the label. Lizard skin is a cermaic insulator. Herculiner or line-x is just for durabilty and prevents scratches in your bed floor paint that rust after time.
jfrolka speaks the truth. Bedliner is just that, bedliner, and IMO has no business on underbodies...you'll just end up redoing your work down the road. Lizard Skin, when applied properly, is well worth the extra expense.
Lizard skin is for interior and not exterior panels. At least that's what the factory rep told me when I was writing an article on it. Herculiner or whatever spray bed liner can help keep the paint on your fenders if you run 'em from getting those little stars in the paint from stones being tossed up by your tires. It is a far better alternative than the old school undercoating that often leaked and trapped moisture, salt, and, etc between it and the body panels. That said it is not old school so if you have to be totally period the old time undercoating is the way for you to go and I doubt that spray-on bed liner really makes a very good sound deadener. I'm not sure that this answers the question but its a stab at it anyway.
HUH? *Good* spray-on bed liner is nearly bullet proof and MUCH more resistant to abrasion, moisture and the elements than ANY 'normal' undercoating. If you've got good, solid panels and a clean surface its nearly impossible to beat good bedliner as protection on floors and fenderwells. I'm not talking the cheap-o SEM stuff, I'm talking the new urethane stuff that is layed on pretty thick. When I can slide a truckload of scrap motors across a Rhino liner and not even see the marks then its good enough to for a floorboard. On the other hand if you want to insulate for noise/heat then the Lizard Skin on the inside would be a great idea. ....better yet, Rhino Liner, Line-X, etc on the underside to protect against mother nature and and Lizard Skin inside for noise/heat reduction. -Bigchief.
Was going to line-x the floor and lower portion of the side walls on the inside of my panel and lizard skin the upper panels and roof...how about a combo plate
As other people have said, Lizard Skin is for the "Interior" and Bed Spray is for the exterior. You need to be aware, that not all spray on bedliners are equal. The important..........Very Important first step in spraying on bedline is prep. The surface can't be wet, rusty, and can't have been recently painted. The bedliners that are the best are the ones that go on "Hot", about 180 degrees and they will setup with 15/20 seconds. The cure time is very short also, maybe 12 hours before you can start pounding/rubbing/cutting. I have seen this sprayed on rocker panels, interiors, fenders, bumpers, and even bed surfaces of roll-up tow trucks. At least here in NorCal it runs around $5 to $7 per square foot to have it prep'd and sprayed, with a waranty.................lifetime. IMHO
I've heard that Lizard Skin is for interior only, but have seen it used on underbodies... not that I'd do such a thing. ~Jason
I used to work at Hot Rods and Custom Stuff in Escondido, we used it on all the high dollar cars that came out of there. The stuff is Bad ass. Drew
i have ryno liner in my 2002 Z-71 , been there since 3 days after purchase..I work in heavy industry..meaning it gets abused on a daily basis..still looking good..still tough as the day they put it on. I would do it again in a heart beat to my next truck. all the other coatings claim to be as good..I really cant say, I know im not going to try it just to have to spend the money to take it back off and do it right the second time. and i think Fab32 has got it right..your comparing two different products for 2 seperate purposes..no comparison.
Here's what my main question was - I'll give you a hypothetical as to what I'm thinking. Say a guy had, oh, a J-Body convertible (because I do indeed have one). Provided the floor wasn't too bad off, if he painted it with POR-15 (with proper prep, of course), which would be better to spray on next? Bedliner, or Lizard Skin? Maybe bedliner with the stuff that makes Lizard Skin Lizard Skin - those "micro balloons" mixed in? Can I get the same effect as Lizard Skin with bedliner, only cheaper? I know it'll be more of a protectant than an insulator, but I was wondering how much better Lizard Skin was than bedliner insulation-wise when painted on the floor. Like 30% better? And if it's way cheaper for only 30% less efficient insulation than Lizard Skin, why do people still use Lizard Skin? I know they're two different products for two different applications, but I'm using it on the floor of an F1 cab that will be used as a work truck. Maybe I won't put down a rubber mat or carpet if whatever I spray down is tough enough... ~Jason ~Jason
A lot of good info here, but a long read.... http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ Don't know if that really answers the original question of whether the Lizard Skin is worth the extra dough I'm going with the Reflectix on the roof and/or Peel and Seal on the rest of the interior and bedliner underneath.
HELLO!!! Once again ...................it's obvious that you haven't a clue as to what these products are intended to accomplish and even with all of the information that's been given your still trying to compare two totally diffferent products. Do some research. Contact the manufacturers and tell them your plans and let them get a good laugh. Most people finally realize after repeatedly slamming their head into a concrete wall it feels a lot better when they stop. Your experience may vary. Frank
I had gatorhide sprayed inside and under cab, under running boards, fenders,it is good stuff like ryno or line ex,its very tough and it did quite down noise,im glad i did the bedliner
