Estate sale. I'm sure they didn't know what it is. $5. Will someone tell me what the rope os for. Guess I should just take it apart and find out. Not sure what to do about the dent. Probably just pull it out and fix it. Hate to drill a hole and weld it. Some of my friends probably have one of those weld on pullers. Gary
I knew I would get shit about the roadster. That's what I was driving when I saw the estate sale sign. The tank looks to be galvanized. Hate to put any heat to it. Maybe I'll just fill it full of Bondo. Thinking it might look right in place on my '48 moordoor.
Here's some info about disassembly, repair, theory of operation and what the ropes are for. Found this on some site called the Jalopy Journal, of all places. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/inside-the-thermador-swamp-cooler-revealed.674291/
That's an old Firestone cooler minus the support rod. The ropes rotate the internal drum, left and right. The drum has aspen inside that absorbs water. Remove the rear cap and you should be able to remove the drum and repair the dent. Here's a NOS one I had showing adjustable support rod that attaches to underside and rests on door frame.
My mother bought one of those when she bought her new '57 Chevy. If I remember correctly pulling the rope turned a drum inside the unit that was made with a filter like material. The drum rotated through the water at the bottom of the cooler and became wet. Air blowing through the now wet filter material was cooled by evaporation. Charlie Stephens
