I am looking at a 1933 Ford 5 window project. I'm not sure about the prices, so I thought I would get a little feedback before making the leap. The car is all steal, with a new custom frame with disc brakes, power rack and pinion, new crate 347 engine, new T-5 transmission, re-chromed original grill, Dutchman 9" posi rear end, and lots of other new parts. The car needs a nicer firewall and probably a couple floor patches. Looking to see what it might be worth, Thanks

There are a ton of new little parts, but I could not tell you all of them. Yes, it has a clean 1933 title. I think it has redone bumpers and there are original running boards and original fenders. Two hoods.

Steve's Auto Restorations in Portland OR did the frame. I know nothing about the shop, but from the sounds of your post, they must do pretty crappy work? I will have to check it out again a little closer.

This is why I'm on here asking. I would not know if the frame has a bend in it or if it's straight. I know all frames are not the same.

the body looks really clean! the frame looks kinda funky tho

  7. Needless to say the number on the tittle matches the number Ford stamped into the top of the left frame rail near the steering. What is the number, use XXX for the last three digits. How about a picture of the number, cover the last three digits? When you say steal instead of steel it makes me nervous.

You should be able to verify that Steve's Auto Restoration did the frame (chassis) or not. You are close to them. They have a good reputation for excellent work. Everything else is up to you. Be aware Steel gene. body work can run way up there unless you can do it.

    Sorry, I meant steel :)
I guess I mean, he received a 33 title with the original body and frame. He still has the original frame against the wall and it comes with the car. I can ask him to send me a picture of the title. I can do the body and paint work myself, so the cost is limited to materials.

Buy the whole thing then sell the chassis to a street rodder who would appreciate the nasty MII and the narrowed rear frame rails. There are two good original frames in the HAMB classifieds right now.

    Good luck, -Abone.

What are they asking for it, now remember the HAMB is a traditional hot rod board so if I got that car to me the only thing of any worth is the body and if the og frame came with it I'd have that as well. The rest would be in the classifieds. It all depends on the the style of build you want, street rod or hot rod.

I say buy it. Body and other parts may be worth the price alone.

You need someone who knows what they are looking at to inspect it in person. That "power rack and pinion" is a manual rack. Can you just buy the body and original frame and leave that streetrod stuff behind?

I bet that funky frame rail is just the camera angle, it's not a straight on shot.

The guy want's 20k for the whole package. It does come with the crate engine and new transmission. It seems a little high to me too, that's why I was asking. The car comes with the original frame, it's leaning up against his wall.

I just don't want to over spend on the project if I will need to throw half of it away. He will only sell as a package. He says he is firm at the 20k........

Being as though it is really hard to see too much of either side of the boxed frame on the left, I would say that the photo was straight on in regards to straight above and inline with that section. So it is curved, but is that necessarily bad? All depends on what you're putting in there, correct?

  21. If the body is strait and relatively rust free, has a dash, all garnish, latches, regulators, I think he's right on at 20K, maybe a little high. If that body is as good as it looks, it's probably worth 12-15K. Having a title is a huge bonus. Rechromed grill- 2K, original frame? 1-2K. Hoods, bumpers, fenders...every part to these cars is expensive. So the more there is the better deal it is. All that street rod stuff is gross, but cost a lot. I could not tell you what the street rodded frame/engine/trans is worth, but I'm sure you could get some decent money for it.

Even though the chassis is of a too modern style for my tastes, 20K is a very reasonable price for the whole package. Get your money out and get going on that build!

  23. Plenty of guys on here that would buy that at 18---20. I've seen several for sale for several thousand more. I'd sure give 20g if it's alll there.

Get as many of the original parts that you can if you do decide to buy it. Some of the parts aren't repro'd and originals are expensive. I was at the Pamona swap meet several years ago and a vendor had a complete set of '33 window moldings for a 3 window. Price was a steal at $2000!

kcode, This looks like a good deal to me. Steve's Auto Restoration is a Quality shop, they have built many high profile cars, look them up. If they did the frame they copied a TCI, that is a TCI front end. If you check the price on a TCI frame with disc brake rear end it will be about $12,000. Chris knows his '33-4 parts, he says 12-15000 for the body. Fenders & hood, $1500-2500. A cherry rechrome '33 grille is worth $3,000-4500. A buddy sold one last year for $3200 and just bought a 33 coupe, it's going to cost him more to replace. He's kicking himself for selling the other one. Look up what Summit wants for a 347 crate motor, $3500-4900. New T5... $2500. What are we up to... about $36,000. The org frame & title are worth $1500-2000. Looks like a half price deal to me. Don't get all hung up on the traditional stuff around here. I have a lot of buddies that run TCI frames with this setup and they go down the road great. Powdercoat the frame flat black, hang the fenders on it and drive the heck out of it. If somebody bends over to bitch about it not having a Ford axle and bones on it, kick them in the ass.

That's a steal. Sell the drive train and laugh all the way to the bank.

  27. Assuming the title matches the original frame that comes with it you should inquire with your local DMV as to what it takes paperwork wise to change a frame. I did it in California about 40 years ago and all they wanted was a statement of facts explaining what happened. Then of course that was another time in another state.

  28. Oh yes, I was thinking 2,000 for a 34 grill (which even that is a good deal), a 33 will be quite a bit more

I guess I was lucky - I didn't pay much more than that for my 90% complete '34 when I bought in '08 with a clear NC '34 title (critical in NC). I would go get it & sell what U don't use. You'll be surprised what you can get for the left overs.

I'd bet with a bit of advertising work you could easily get $10K for the new drivetrain and that new chassis, then you've only got $10K left in a really nice original body with original frame, rechromed grille, ect.

Well worth the leg work, that's a steal.
