1972 Mustang 351 Cleveland not sure abot transmission will fit c4 I hope Looking to install in a 1948 merc car frame . Would this be a good choice ? The price is right . Would it be the same size as the 302 ? Thanks Thanks
Please hand in your man card. There is no such thing as to large when it comes to engines. It just means that you need to work a little harder to make it fit.
Might require firewall surgery. What suspension are you planning to use? And it should bolt to a 302 type C4, although finding the right parts (flex plate, separator plate, etc) might take some work.
Pieceola Cakeorini! Proceed as planned. Those Fords & Mercs have had Chrysler Hemis put in there too many times to count. A Cleveland can't (shouldn't) be any more difficult than that. Putting all seriousness aside......go for it! Ray
LOL don't want to do any major surgery . I have no firewall as of now . Suspension most likely Mustang II Would like to hear from someone who has installed one thanks . Might be better with a 302 or chev 350 ? Cheers
The 60s-70s Ford engines have the distributor in the front, but that also means the oil pump in in the front...and it wants to be where a Mustang II crossmember goes. The Chevy engines fit more easily, since they have a rear sump. I know a couple guys running Clevelands in 4os Fords, they both have modified firewalls and modified MII crossmembers.
I had a Cleveland engine in my 41 Ford convertible. It will fit fine. You will need a pickup truck oil pan which has the deep part more to the center of the pan. Rear left exhaust port was a little close to the steering column, ( if you were to use stock ex.)but your Merc ch***is is 4" longer so maybe not an issue. I made a set of four tube headers and no problem with clearance. Used a C4 ****** which fit easily in the frame. There ya go. Art
… If you’re after a street engine get the 1970 351-400ci Clevelands they had a smaller Bellhouse and will sit under the Firewall further. Having a frt mount Dist. is a plus! you won’t have to do a lay job on your engine while adjusting timeing etc. Oil Pans are available frt or rear sump; serious racers mount Screen Pick-up to Pan and have a HD flex hose to Pump. There is a lot to know so get yourself one of the many 351-400 Cleveland & Modified Engine Books available and educate yourself. If your using this for the street stay away from the 4 Barrel Heads because velocity is terrible under 3K RPM. The 2 Barrel canted Valve small block Cleveland is imp***ive enough. Save yourself a lot of headaches try to find an Engine and Trans combo; also only in 1970 they were available with a C6.
All 351 Clevelands had the small block bellhousing. The 351M/400 had the big block bellhousing, except a few 1973 400's with the small bellhousing, but they are tough to find these days.
is their any way to use the existing front spring set up with new shocks ? instead of going to the mustang set up . I found a 305 chev coupled with a TH350 transmission. Thanks
