If you are bringing it in from another state, make sure you don't have to have a ***le when you transfer it in your state. I think the seller should have proof of ownership of some kind.

Call your DMV, or look up their rules on the web. If the car is a CT car your fine....each state is different, in NC it's a pain you would have to bond the car after a NC DMV inspection.

A huge bargaining tool on your part. I'd have the vin run befor seller got a dime. Good luck. Ask why seller never ***led it.

Once you register it in CT in your name, it is now OK to go to another state that may or may not be a ***le state. Some states require a current reg in your name when you move, or some will take an expired reg.

But the real issue, it to make sure you will be the legal owner when you buy it. Try to get some proof of the seller being the rightful owner.

I just bought a car from a dealer in KY. He was selling it for the lein holder who was in IL and who had obtained the car from NH on a bill of sale. In order to ***le it to me in PA, I had to get a legal ***le to transfer. It took a few weeks for KY to trace back to the NH seller and settle the legality of the whole deal. Big PITA.

If you can get a car on a bill of sale, fine. But if you ever want to sell it, then the fun begins.

Thanks all for the heads up!!

  10. Once you have CT paperwork in your name you're good to go in most other states, I wouldn't worry about it.

Have the state highway patrol do a vin check for you and make sure it's not stolen!

It's just too much h***le anymore. The only cars I'll buy without a ***le are parts cars that will go to the crusher when I'm done with them.

Just be sure your ready to do the work of getting a ***le if you decide to get the car. I spent year trying to get a ***le for my "model a" and it was a major pain in the ***. I did eventually get one but I will never go through that again. Lotta running around, talking to law enforcement, BMV, and getting differnt information from everyone regardign the same questions. Good luck!

i think a guy that knows all the ins and outs of securing ***les could make a few bucks....

Not on the HAMB - ***les wanted or For Sale - Not Allowed.

Bottom line - Go to your States Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure how to get one if you need one.

The HAMB is not responsible for any Motor Vehicle ***le information.

Like chaddillac said. Have the state patrol or your local police dept. run the vin # on
the car. People use cars for calateral on wash machines or other home improvements.

Get the current owner to get the car registered and tagged in his state first. That way they will run a check to make sure the VIN is a clean one. Since you don't need a ***le in your state, a current registration will allow them to easily transfer it.

This really isn't the best place to ask, unless you happen across someone from your state who has recently gone through this very thing....Check with your county treasurer, or whomever you register vehicles with in your state.

In my state, (KS), it's no big deal at all. Any vehicle 35 years old or older can be transferred with a bill of sale. A vehicle older than 1950 doesn't even need a VIN inspection, a vehicle 1950 or newer will need one. That's a matter of $15 and the VIN or serial # matching the # on the bill of sale, and an NCIC check.

In your state, ????? Check it out with your local officials.

I'd say he is on the right track. Is there a way to track how long the car has been registered in that state? If it was sold new there and had continuous registration I don't see a problem but if it just appeared in the state a year or two ago I would be a bit afraid of it unless you can track it's history.

If the seller lives in a ***le state or doesn't have it registered in his name I'd say have him get that done before you buy it so you just have to transfer the papers out of his name to yours. I've hopefully fought the last "changed hands three times without changing the ownership papers" vehicle paper work on a rig. The last one cost me 100 extra because a previous owner two owners ago had dated the ***le when she sold it. The ***le was good but had never been transferred and kept up to date.

I think he meant someone who would, for a fee, help buyers legally acquire a ***le in their home state?
The process is so confusing in some states that I'm surprised this isn't a common business! ("***le expediting"? "Legal ***le acquisition ***istance"?)

Some States just have Bill of Sale, but it would be best if you get it Notorized first, before Money. In Ohio a Out of State Inspection has to be performed, and be matching #'s. Then take it to BMV. If they are not sure, have them call State BMV; not all are up on old cars.

Some states like vermont dont issue ***les on cars that are over 25 years old, but its not a problem to take it to a state that does, the dmv will issue a ***le for you if its going to another state that needs a ***le, i brought a truck into canada with no ***le like that

I have done a couple non ***le and out of state deals in Ct recently and have had no issues at all.

  29. I just bought a '30 tudor without a ***le, I used a ***le company I found on the internet AFX ***le company. It took about 4 weeks but I got my ***le. cost about $700 all said and done, that was the bad part. I had to pay sales tax in two states as they got me a Ct. registration, then I got my Md. ***le from that.

  30. A good quick check would be to tell the "owner" you would like the VIN so you can check it in the system. If he panics you know there is probably a problem. If it p***es that test be sure to check with your DMV and do it right. Did he tell you why he doesn't have a ***le?
