Changing the color of the interior would be pretty simple and cheap. I don't think I'd want that stained front seat upholstery on there anyway. But dye the door panels and recover the seats, that upholstery looks like a standard $400 pleated vinyl kit anyway, very easy to redo.

Shame that nice Desoto grille got wiped out.

Anyone seen what the 4 door 50 Mercury went for at Copart? I goofed up and signed in too late and it was over already. I saw 9 o'clock and thought that was my time and didn't even considered where the auction was at. Last I saw it was at $5100. Thanks

This is an auction....meaning...nothing really happens until the auction approaches it's deadline. There is absolutely no reason to make any bids at this time. It could be at $ 0 right now and it would not change the final result one iota.

That's true Hns. It only gives the ones that think it was only worth $2500 or less more time to think it over.

Serious buyers (including myself) will not bid on this until tuesday. All bids before tuesday are just wishful thinkers having fun.

So your going to pull the trigger and try to get it? Within reason...

  11. I am interested in the final price. I don't see this as a parts car.

I'm gonna throw it out there (and I don't know if I'm the first or not because I didn't read the entire thread), but I have a 49-50 merc front clip that I'll let go cheap. It's stock, but it might get that car back together quickly & easily. It came off a running driving car a few years ago.

I say $500 to haul it away that is fair. I paid a $1000 for my Merc and it was sitting in a field for 17 years needless to say its a fordor but I like it but it will need a lot of work. I do think the frame will need alot of work on that but the smashed in body is hiding all the evidence so unless they can prove it is fine then $1000.00 because you might want to do more body work and get new paint/accessories. If they were smart they would flip it themselves and bring in 28,000.

Well last time I was at Kessler's in Earl, WI, last year they have three 49-51 Mercs in the yard, so the parts are there for the re-builder.

The funny thing is that if the photo showed a body with the damaged hacked off this wouldn't be a 10 page thread.

Insurance totals at what? 60 percent of value? I still say look at frame. Almost sure some one added a clip. Look at the way it folded and buckeled

$5200 on Salvage world, I would guess the majority of HAMB members that have any interest in it would be out now. Still a about a day to go, then it will have it's 2 minutes of live auction.

at Copart it still says $3250 even when I sign in. Yesterday it was a $300.00 difference between looking as a guest and when I log in.

Yea, I was wondering about it being on different sites like that. looks like Salvageworld keeps up with the bids better.

I won't be able to make it to Madison tomorrow to look at it so hopefully a different Hamber goes and looks at it or even buys it and fill us in. I got a chance to make extra money tomorrow and seeing the auction price is at what I can really spend right now, I'm going to do the side job instead.

In most cases, if damage exceeds 70% of ACV, the vehicle normally gets a salvage, if not junk title brand. Through the years I have attended many live salvage auctions. If the insurance thinks they can garner a higher bid on specialty vehicles, they tend not to brand the titles. I saw it happen many times. They paid out a lot, they want a lot back. Besides that, they know there are very few salvage yard/dismantlers that would bid. That's why this one is open for public bids.

In Illinois it is State Law that when an insurance company takes possession of a vehicle and title through an insurance settlement, it MUST surrender the Title and obtain a Salvage Certificate. The Salvage Certificate is functionally the same thing as a title insofar as it is an ownership document and provides for legal transfer to qualified subsequent owners. In Illinois, only licensed Recyclers and/or Rebuilders may take ownership via the Salvage Certificate. In IL, the only way to buy a damaged vehicle on it's original title, not a Salvage Certificate, is if the owner takes a cash settlement and does not surrender the vehicle and title to the Ins Co. Vehicles dealt with in this manner do bring a premium. However, they may not escape CARFAX's notice.

If the vehicle is parted out, the SC must be surrendered in favor of a Junking Certificate. In the case of severely damaged, or certain categories of vehicles, a Junking certificate is issued initially. Once a vehicle has had a JC it cannot be returned to a Title status, Branded or otherwise.

In the case of no damage, or damage that does not exceed 25% of a vehicle's cash value, such as might occur in a theft and recovery, a clear unbranded title can be applied for to return a vehicle to normal title status.

Unfortunately, CARFAX will record the various issuances, and damaged a little or not at all, a vehicle will still have a blemished history in CARFAX's files..

I do not know Wisconsin's laws regarding vehicles obtained and sold by Insurance Companies.

I'm going to make my third and final guess at sale price. Due to the amount of attention its gotten I'm going with $10500. I hope that's way high.

  27. who is worried about carfax on a 60+ year old car, crap every car built on this site would probably be a total on paper. There have been a few rebuilt title classics go thru barret jacksons and bring premium $. Even if it gets a parts only title you can use the numbers on your replacement frame or "fire wall" or bring it to AL. where titles are not needed on pre 75 vehicles. Any way, looks like good builder to me and I hope somebody here gets it so we can watch.

There is a lot more taken into consideration by the insurance company than the damage percentage of avc. That formula went out the door years ago. As a VT licensed appraiser and licensed adjuster, I have dealt with a lot of salvage.

Tomorrow is the final day isn't it? If a Hamber scores it I hope they post what it really is like after they get it.
I'm sticking with it'll be an easy build.
