Two gaskets, that's weird. The cylinders you showed in your pics are sleeved. But the crack doesn't seem to be seeping any coolant into the cylinder.

After looking closer all the cylinders on that side are sleeved and have standard Pistons. Looks like perhaps the intake valve was open and it got some water down the carburetor over time as around the valve seat and the bottom of the Piston are eaten up . The crack doesn't go into the cylinder but does go into the valve seat. Wondering if the compression is pushing into that crack into the cooling system. I dropped off the head at the machine shop to check for cracks and if it's good they're going to resurface it and give it a try 20230118_122122.jpg 20230118_122157.jpg

That's wild, I've never heard of using two head gaskets before. I'd be curious to know what that valve seat looks like, but I don't see how it would cause the coolant issue, although I'm no mechanic. I'm really interested to see how this goes now, curious to know the outcome.

And I'm also sold on the radiator hose filter idea, surprised this is the first time I ever saw them. Clearly works!

Well I got a call from the machine shop and the head is cracked in the combustion chamber so perhaps that's why it's pushing coolant out of that side and bubbling that I can see in the filter. I took a couple pictures but it's kind of hard to see in the phone pictures. I filled the combustion chamber with water and going to see if it drains out overtime. Luckily I had another flat head at the shop and stole a head off of it and dropped it off after work to be checked out and hopefully this one's good. Also you can see where the head gasket has actually smooshed into the cylinder head maybe because of the Dual gaskets? 16741788696195313534570994995831.jpg 20230119_173339.jpg 20230119_173324.jpg 20230119_173837.jpg 20230119_173355.jpg

Iron heads are almost free. Do a little networking and I bet you can find one in your town.

In the last post I said I grabbed another head from a spare motor I had and got it dropped of to check out

Well the water that I poured in the chamber didn't leak out overnight but I figured it might not without the pressure from compression. Hopefully the head I dropped off last night will be good today and I can slap it back together and have a good day

Bust! Well the reason for the dual head gaskets is the Piston touches the head if only one is used. So when this block was sleeved I believe they decked it maybe too much Plus the head that I just got magged and cleaned he had to cut it a few passes so that didn't help and the Pistons do pop out of the block 1674262465377857936398554024278.jpg 16742624990397602896340178226539.jpg 16742625147972572286304658376973.jpg a little bit. I'm sure I could get a thicker head gasket but that may take a while So I guess I'm going to stack the head gaskets unless somebody else has a better idea. I've heard of this being done before

I think there is a thin and thick head gasket.

    The V8 pict is an 8BA 49 to 53

Are all the pistons 1/8 high or just the one, maybe someone put merc pistons in it. Don't know how that 1/8 works out with a standard ford crank. To deck a block that much doesn't seen right.

I started another thread on the head gasket problem. Turns out I have 239 8ba Pistons on a Merc crank and they all hang out of the hole that much. I ended up putting double gaskets on it with copper coat on them and Permatex shellac on the threads of the bolts. Got it all done this morning and everything worked out good no more bubbling or overheating it sits right at 165 170 for now 20230123_091326.jpg 20230120_165440.jpg 20230120_153757.jpg 20230123_093011.jpg

Ford pistons on a 4" crank? Wow! Glad you have got to the bottom of it. But the main problem was the cracked head.. Is that right?

Definitely the cracked head was a problem as it was in the combustion chamber but maybe the double head gaskets from years ago fix was it too. All I know now is that it works just fine and purs like a walrus

Do you run filters on the bottom radiator hoses also or just on top? They seem pretty ingenious!

Just on the top hoses to keep the chunks out of the radiator!

Up to date picture. Got my wheels painted and my Firestone 67015 tires mounted and balanced. Pulled the exhaust manifolds off to fix the one side and ended up buying another one off of eBay. Didn't find any hubcaps or skirts at the Moon I show this weekend 20230127_162520.jpg 20230127_162543.jpg

the whitewalls look great as does the tail dragger stance, love it!!!! I think it would look cleaner without the bumper guards and over rider on the front though...

Funny you should mention it I do not like the bumper guards or overrider. I'm going to remove them for sure and keep them. Having a hard time finding skirts for this thing. I messaged a guy here on the ham about some fiberglass ones that he had for sale last year and hopefully he still has them

I've been looking for a couple hours today and I definitely saw that pair. The $400 is quite a bit right now for me but it does say make an offer so I'll see what happens

I got the driver side exhaust manifold studs fixed and installed and removed the front bumper guards and overrider. Until I get some full caps and skirts I've got a couple sets of early beanie caps so I tossed a set on the car and they look pretty decent for now. The passenger exhaust manifold should be here later this week 20230130_103407.jpg 20230130_103037.jpg 20230130_103407.jpg 20230130_103037.jpg
