A friend of mine machined about a 4" tall little cone to thread onto the exsisting shifter then we bent the shifter rod to fit how I wanted it welded it to the cone and added a shift knob. Beat it like crazy for about 5 years, worked great, and if I wanted to race or shift fast it could be screw'd off and the short shifter was still there. Gary

:Dhere are the shots of mine, we welded the arm originaly to the top of the stock shifter but it broke after about a week, so then we put a coupler over the old shifter and the new arm and then welded it together then had to reheat the lower part of the arm as you can see because it was now too close to the dash and it broke the choke nob.
its in perfect location now and i have a B&M short throw shifter to install later as you can see this is a work in progress.

Whats up with the t5 thread I thought this was a traditional site and things like this were unacceptable?I really don't care either way because if your gonna drive one it makes sense but I saw a thread the other day where a guy was bashed page after page because his model a was not considered traditional but a rat rod and he posted pics of it here.

Gennie Makes them, I have them in stock at my shop. Call them up.

  7. I used thin wall tubing, packed it with sand then did my bends (then remove sand). Weld in short bolt up top for knob and weld the stick to a nub of the original shifter.

Using solid bar stock is too heavy and may make the thing apt to jump out of gear if you hit a good bump. The stick won't bend unless you are powershifting like a maniac...in which case the T-5 will not survive its first day...and you don't know that a long throw isn't conducive to performance driving.

I must have written something weird! I'll go back and change it in the article! The height of the spacer and the new hole should match. I remember I did both at 1 1/4". I may have been able to go farther apart and get even quicker shifts, but I didn't want to screw anything up without having a spare shifter.

Thanks for pointing that out Dave! I don't have an editor double checking my work! ;)
