Today on the online version of my local newspaper there was an article about a guy who was arrested after racing on the parkway:

    http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008809250518

More of this story is expect to run tomorrow.

For the past year or so I have been looking into the many different ways to start up a drag strip and I think that things like this may draw attention to an important issue. Unfortunately, by me land is expensive and there isn't that much left to go around. I have done some research through the IHRA and NHRA and have a general idea of some of the requirements for building a strip. The most important by far is money.

Located about 40 minutes from the city in the NY tri-state this area seemed very appealing to the person I spoke to at the NHRA as he said a very large number of their members are from this area.

In an effort to "strike while the iron is hot" I have started up a blog, albeit poor quality, in an effort to bring attention to the benefits of having a dragstrip in my county. I hope that I can generate enough awareness/interest that it would be possible to bring this to fruition.

    The address is: http://rocklanddragway.blogspot.com/

I would appreciate any advice or comments to help me with this. I know I am not the only person locally with this interest, so what ever information I gather may be shared if it will benefit the cause. News clipping, movies, trends, and opinions are all welcome. Negative comments are also welcome as an idea without criticism is more likely faulty than one with.

    Thanks
    Richard

    Any advice?

So far my comments on the news paper have elicited a couple of comments along the lines:

"You really think the kids of today are the same as the kids from the 50's? Even the wildest of kids from the 50's doesn't compare to the spoiled over zealous kid of today. They don't race because there is no place to do it, they race because they want to do it there and now. My point about their vehicles is that all they know is they are fast. They have no idea about any other part of their vehicle other than the gas pedal. The only pride they take in their vehicles is the fact that it looks good and it's loud. The kids of the 50's worked on their own vehicles, and paid for every single thing that went into them. So, what exactly do you not get? If you wanted to race, join NASCAR, otherwise, there is no business for it on the roads by inexperienced people. Stop watching Too Fast Too Furious."

From past experience your biggest problem will be noise laws, EPA, and zoning regulations. Fed laws states the amount of decibels you can have at the properity line, and meeting that can be a challenge.
