Trying to get some input here on setting up a Cadillac 331 (1954 block and heads) with solid lifters and using Studebaker adjustable rocker arms. I have got the set up all done and I am fully aware of the clearance issues with stock and aftermarket valve covers clearing the Studebaker rocker arms with this application. I did acquire a pair of later castings Hildebrandt dimpled valve covers, but I am still having slight contact issues with the rocker arms and the covers. You would almost have to lift the bottom (towards the exhaust ports) of the valve cover up about 15 to 20 degrees to get the cover to not come into contact with the rocker arms. I am trying to determine if the casting of the Hildebrandt covers has lost its spec and depth of the dimples or what I can do to rectify my issue. Any expert input is appreciated. Thanks, ERIC
Are the Studebaker valve covers any deeper? I realize they bolt on differently but a couple of brackets could be made if the covers will clear the rockers. Dave.
You cant just grind some extra clearance into the underside if the valve covers? arent they pretty thick ?
I realize this may sound a little wierd but you could take one of your cover gaskets down to the local waterjet cutting shop and have a spacer cut out of something, aluminum, steel, plastic, whatever, and slip them under your existing covers like spacers. Paint them yellow or polish them up, I don't think they would even show. Just an idea. Dave. P.S. That's going to be a fine looking rod, I love Caddy engines. Good looking welds on your frame too.
I've seen someone use spacers made out of aluminum sheet, and for additional clearance, a little grinding done to the inside of the valve cover on the bottom side for clearance. BEWARE. If you grind dimples on the inside of the valve cover, the thin spots will show through when the valve cover gets polished.
