A buddy has a 1950 Ford shoebox 3speed without overdrive. It has been modded by a previous owner with a Fenton 3speed floor kit. Recently, the tranny has started clashing quite a bit when slotting gears. Im thinking the first thing to check before ripping the tranny apart is the adjustment of the aftermarket kit. I can't find any manuals or instructions on how to set up (and therefore verify nothing has slipped) the shifter. Conversely, im also wondering if the synchros are goin in his transmission... but the problem seems to be affecting all gears, not just first, leading me to think it may be the shifter. any help? Thanks! Tj
First of all, there are no synchros for first gear in a shoebox tranny so it will always clash if trying to downshift. Old timer used the double clutching process for that. Synchros for second and third are brass and probably worn. I would also check out the play in the shifter arms and linkage first. I'm not familiar with Fenton shifter so can't really offer any advice on that.
1. Make sure the linkage is all bolted on tight. 2. Put the transmission in neutral. 3. Put the shifter in neutral. Some have a hole that you can put a pin in to make sure it stays there. 4. Adjust the rods to the proper length so that they just go in the hole. 5. Remove the aligning pin you put in the shifter. 6. Drive. My 2¢ .bjb
