I have been searching the internet looking for casting number information on GM 194/230/250 L6 engines. I have found several different possible answers to my casting numbers but none that say it is a 230 or 250. This could be possible because the blocks for a 230 or a 250 can be used for either. Here are the casting numbers that I have. engine block 3994257 cylinder head 3824485 Maybe someone is an expert on this, I registered with inliners.org and posted the same question there also. Thanks for any help Jon
3994257 67 - '72 250 cu in. And a 3824435 is 194 cu in head '62 - '67 Using the 194 head will raise compression a little but it does have smaller ports and different exhaust port arrangement. Common mod though.
According to my Leo Santucci, Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual, '62-'64 194 heads have siamesed exhaust ports as well as intake ports (all heads have siamesed intake ports) and should not be used. I bought a 194 and unfortunately it had one of those heads and I couldn't use it. The other 194 heads have small combustion chambers and the same port size as the heads on the larger displacement engines, according to his book. Your block casting number is not in Leo's book.
I take it you are saying that its not an 8 its a 3, is this a problem they had stamping the 3? I looked at it again and it looks like an 8 but I have seen other forums some guys say what you are saying and some say it is an 8 but when I search it with the 3 I find all kinds of information. The date code on the head is K238. Thanks for the input. Jon
Jon, Regarding the head, make sure it does not have siamesed exhaust ports. Then, cc the combustion chambers and calculate if it will work in your application. The Santucci book has the head casting # dbradley shows and does not have the # you have. Bob

Im looking into buying a 74 nova with the same 3994257. Everyone here has said '67-'72. Did it carry over to '74 and beyond? Looks to be the original motor for the car, but who knows. Is this casting just a genralized stamping for GM for common 250's? Thanks
there should be a partial VIN stamped on the engine, see if it matches the car. The last 6 digits should be the same, and the first 3 of the engine stamping will tell you what year it is and where it was built.
