I've read many times from the 97 Guru's that the cheap chrome air cleaners don't flow enough air. Is it just the paper filter causing the problem and will K&N's make them usable or is it the design? I bought a pair of the helmet style cleaners for my last twin carb Flatty and it wouldn't even make it out of the driveway, choked it too bad. If you know of something, show me. Thanks in advance for your help.
I've even encountered problems with better reusable filters restricting also. I've been using a "double wrap" from momma's nylons after drilling holes into the re-usables for 5 years now on two engines. I Haven't had any problems with dirt in carbs at all and get great air flow.
Also depends on how big of an engine you are putting them on... Cut out every other section on the back half of the filter and use a nylon "sock" that is available, I used them on my Y-block whem I ran the 94's. The socks ae also good for air compressor filters and bead blast cabinets.
Had a 3/4 race flatty in my 36 and ran these aftermarket air cleaners for 3 yrs with no problem. They have replaceable paper elements.Drove from CA to UT over 3 mountain passes.Never ever had issues.Hope this helps.
I use stainless mesh i got in a sample kit from mccaster carr. I had a thread on it and the filters i made.
Small k&n washables ,just use the correct cleaner . If you are worried about the filter restricting flow drive with out filters for a bit do a plug check ,replace the filters and do the same. If you feel the little chrome cover is restricting flow you can always raise the cover a little so just the lower portion has a shot of direct clean air.
I use the K N filters on my flathead with 2 Strombergs. Would not run with the paper filters that came with air cleaners. I put a thick foam rubber gasket on top of elements to raise the top part of air cleaner 1/4". That put a little more clearance between the top an base of air cleaner for a little more air.
it's the helmet style with the sides that taper in at the bottom that is choking the air flow regardless of filter the cheapo chrome with straight sides and K&N filters work much better I've run them on several multi carb setups without issue
Yep, another vote for the K&N's here. I ran K&N's in some small chome bells on my four Stromberg setup on the hemi. Worked great!
What Paul said. Save the helmets to put on, after arriving at the show, then change back, for the drive home. 4TTRUK
On my 34 flatty I stacked one on top of the other .Just need a longer bolt. If one is good two are twice as good according to Mr. Justice when he was still on earth. Hence JB 80 to compete with WD40. Least that is what he told me.
I run 94s and cut up some flat K&Ns on a band saw to fit in frog mouths then siliconed them in from the back side...
I couldn't find them on the K&N site but, http://www.speedwaymotors.com/3-7-8-Inch-Washable-Air-Filters,4264.html
