I picked up a pair of original Keystone Klassics today, and while I was at the guy's shop I saw this neat old tach and had to buy it as well. I have never heard of this brand before, but a friend tells me they were made by TRW. Does anyone have any other info on this brand or when this model of tach came out? I have done some searches for both acroTach and Acron gauges and come up with nothing, except for some other tachs for sale on various sites. No real info to speak of. By the looks of it I am guessing late 60s era, which would be perfect for my '60 Biscuit project with it's mid/late 60s weekend-racer vibe. If anyone else is running one of these, or other gauges of this brand I would love to see them!
Even if you don't use E-Bay, it's always a good "reference" site; no less than 5 Acrotachs are currently listed. They kind of have a Sun/Stewart Warner cross thing going on. I have a NOS Tach, in it's original box with instructions, that is 100% identical to an 8K Sun Super Tach; it just does't say Sun on it anywhere; not even in the instructions. Made, like mine, yours is a knock-off, of sorts. Just made/sold cheaper than what they copied; mine is made by Equis Products, Inc, out of Fountain Valley, Ca at the time (paperwork says 1991). It's actually "MADE" in Taiwan. I have put it side-by-side, against my actual Sun 8K Super Tach, and they are 100% the same, except this one does't say "Sun" on it,. anywhere. And, it was an E-Bay purchase. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Like you said im thinking the Acrotach was made by Actron. Actron sold/sells electronic testers..multimeters..dwell tachs at auto part stores. This tach was probably something sold at an auto parts store. Actron evidently made Sun Tachs...kind of makes sense... sell Sun tachs at hot rod places and Acrotachs at regular parts houses alongside their testers..
Thanks for the info, I didn't know Actron made Sun products, that does make sense that they would look similar. I'll post pics when I get it installed later this week! Thanks again guys!
My post was showing the change in ownership of "Sun" gauges and the decline. I prefer and sold Sun Electric gauges made up into the 70's. There was less standardization of gauges and values back then but they were more reliable and lasted longer. That's why I put vintage NOS Suns in the '31 build. Truth be told, I've had as good of luck with newer off-brand gauges as many big names. I don't bother with new SW due to reliability issues and don't much like the look of Classic (but haven't run a set). I'm running AutoGage mechanicals in the '32 but don't have any time on them yet, so the jury's still out. I imagine for most people it's about the looks first and then cross their fingers they get the "good" set.
