I'm building a 1940 Ford Tudor Sedan and I'm fairly certain about all aspects about the car except for the interior. The car will be all black with red wheels (I know it's over done but I've always wanted to build one since I was a kid) The only variation might be dark orange wheels instead of red if I like how it looks. I really like the styles of the interiors below but I'm not sure what color should accompany the black. I'm not a fan of red and don't think I could deal with a red interior. White will not work because I will destroy it, (I could get covered in grease going to church). I'm set of the dash being black, I entertained the thought about the dash being two tone, but I think it would look best all black. The dash will be left stock with all trim, original steering wheel, radio delete plate, and all original pull knobs. The only thing I am changing is that the car will be switched to a floor mounted shifter. I really like the style of the orange and white interior below, and would like the white in black and maybe a dark or light grey on the bottom. I would keep the kick panels on the bottom of the doors black as well. If anyone has any ideas or pictures of other interiors they would suggest then I'm open for anything, other than the stock brown. I posted the same pictures in the Photoshop thread hoping that someone would play around with the colors, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to start a thread to get some ideas flowing. If this is in the wrong place, or it's not the type of post that should be on this board I apologize and please delete it. I'm very new so I'll learn eventually where posts go and what I should be posting about. I have just pulled these photos off the web, if this is someone's car and they wish for me to remove these photos please let me know. Thank you, Thomas
I think a nice Med-Grey with the dark orange to match the wheel color. Just replace the white with grey.
Asking for opinions will certainly get you some, maybe some real odd ones. I like the styles of those interiors also. Like you, I could ruin white in 15 minutes. How about a maroon/charcoal gray interior? Either one goes with black. Well, anything goes with black.
I would suggest black bolsters with maroon pleats and a two tone black and maroon dash. It would be classy looking IMHO on a black car. For some reason I never cared for grey in an 40's car, two modern looking.
Here are a few to look at.............I'm not a fan of buckets but those black and white ones turn me on.
how about a burnt orange color for wheels? same color with off white for interior? that said the black & white interior sure looks good.
The orange and white is colorful and cheerful.....but too gaudy...in my opinion. I'm more a monochromatic guy myself......I think the black exterior with a medium gray interior.....minimal use of contrasting color....black dash and carpets....some chrome accents.....definitely no 'flame' floor mats......understated and elegant.
Another vote for the Black and White...hands down.. However, I am ~70 years old, so a bit biased on loving the Old School looks and colors...
Plaid!! Like 40's style seat covers. Or even just plaid inserts. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Lotsa tradeoffs involved with an interior... To a large degree it will depend on the material used. Vinyl is easy to clean, so lighter colors aren't such a big deal if it gets dirty. But vinyl doesn't 'breath' so on hotter days the comfort factor is less. Cloth or leather breathes, but is harder to clean. Dark colors heat-soak easier too (maybe why white was so popular 'back in the day'; black/dark colors in a car in CA could get hot enough to fry eggs on the seat) and with a black car interior heat is going to be an issue in any case. Maybe the best of all worlds would be all black, but with cloth inserts for seating. Or maybe a heavy button-tuft, as this provides 'cooling channels' on the seating areas.
White. If you want it to look badass. Change your pants, or don't. I don't. Hell my firewall is white tuck n roll. Just get some good upholstery cleaner and keep it in the car. Don't go street rod! Matching the wheels to the upholstery can be dangerous. (unless they're white)
Going to try to stay away from matching the wheel color unless I get minor amounts of pin-stripping that would be in red and white. I honestly never thought of maroon and I may combine it with some black combinations in my head and see what I come up with I'm not sure I want any piping that differs from the main color. I've seen it done and it's hard to pull it off properly. I want the interior to be very simple and I think adding piping of a different color may make it "busy" I never thought about that, and I wondered why the greys I did see, just seemed out of place, this may be why. I never would have considered the black and white before that picture but it certainly has the gears in my head turning now. Thank you for that. The wheels may end up Burnt orange or a dark Copper, but I think I want to leave the interior and the wheels unmatched. If I decide to run red wheels for a year the orange interior will look out of place. Orange is actually my favorite color, and there is no way I could have it as my interior. I love to look at it and think it's great, but on Somebody Else's car. They can keep the floor mats as well I think what ever color I go with will go alright with the interior, as I want to keep it basic, plus there will be minimal red in the interior. If I thought I could keep the white I would go with it. I drive my cars a lot and kids will be in this when that time comes. I may have to talk with people who have white interiors and are grease balls like myself. I have actually, I really like cinnamon leather (the color, not going leather) or even a dark tan. I just haven't found a combination I like in an interior. I'm not a fan of the stock interior in the car though. Definitely couldn't do plaid. I have a mexican blanket, not off ebay, but not exactly an expensive one. Will only be used when it's super hot out to lay on the seat while the car is sitting around. Thought about a copper color for the wheels, but can't go orange in the interior. Heat is not a huge issue in Eastern Canada, and it will most likely be Vinyl. I'll have a blanket for the supper hot days, but defintely going Vinyl Thought about it but haven't found the right combination yet I hear you, trying to stay away from it I've thought about this as well. This maroon is a little too soft for me though. Definitely running white walls.
