I'm looking for pictures, drawings, diagrams, etc., of '40s-'50s era automotive swamp coolers.

Any and all help will be much appreciated. TIA.

I know this isn't the normal--hangin' off the window type, but it's pretty cool. Found it at a garage sale and ended up ebaying it. Sits on the floor and uses an internal fan instead of outside air. Never got to try it.

Thanks, guys, great input!. I thinking about designing and building a system for my F-1. I really don't want to put a refrigerated A/C system in it, and think that an evap might do the trick because most of my hot-weather travel is in the West where humidity isn't a problem -- except in Phoenix.

At present I'm thinking a water reservoir in the bed, with a small pump connected to it, is a good idea so the cooler needn't be as large as the old commercial ones were. Rather than excelsior batts, I'm considering an accordian-fold burlap "wick" running the length of the cooler. My pal Fuller suggested putting several Nutserts or Rivnuts in the top of the door frame and bolting the cooler in place when it's being used. Body-color ovalhead screws could disguise the Nutserts when the cooler is removed.

I'm guessing I'll need a valve on the water-distribution tube to regulate the flow over the wick, plus a squirrel-cage blower to move the air at low speed and when stopped.

Most likely we'll make the cooler in stainless so it won't rust, but also 'cause it's pretty and TIGs so neatly.

Any additions/corrections are welcome at this stage, and thanks again for your help thus far.
