  1. Hey guys as I am writing the rules for Heritage Gas, I want to get it right, so I need pictures from back in the day. Not interested in any nostalgic car of today. Just original pictures! Show me what you got! Please verify the source of the photo and date! Thank you!

    Hello,

I was invited to participate in the grand opening event of the Price Transfer, Lions Dragstrip Museum. My drag racing films were shown on the big screen at this grand opening all during the day and into the night.

The centerpiece of this event, even with all of the other top names in drag racing, was the Stone, Woods, Cook, Swindler 2, Willys, live and in person… Straight from 1963-65. Included in the showing was the original grille with all its battle glory.

In talking with Mike Cook of Cook Motorsports (son of Doug Cook) this is the original race car from the 60’s.

I took all of the photos and movies on the early June set up days and on the day of the event, June 24, 2017.

    Hello,

Here is a magazine article on my friend’s red 40 Willys coupe. He started it in 1960 and finished it in 1964, just in time for the Lions Dragstrip All Gassers Drag Meet. He originally had the Moon Tank inside of the cab. But, after our explosion and fire, he constructed special mounts and moved it in front of the radiator.

Being a machinist, he made most of the mounts and necessary items. It is one immaculate Willys and is an excellent example of a backyard builder at the pinnacle of the Gas Coupe and Sedan race cars.

Here is the debut of this well built 40 Willys at an "All Gasser Meet" at Lions Dragstrip in 1964. It was up against some tough competition that day. Atts Ono was on our build/race team for our own 40 Willys and asked me to come and document his debut.

Thanks for the PHR MAG, Jason (elgringo71 HAMB )

similar to our 671 SBC with Strombergs

    Hello,

These photos are as close to our 671/SBC 40 Willys build as possible. They were taken at the Lions Dragstrip Museum opening event back in June of 2017. The red primer paint is the same, the black tow bar under the front, the 671 SBC against the back wall, the two sports car bucket seats, the 3 spoke steering wheel and the blackwalls+ the black rims were the same, too.

It was an eerie site, as our 671/SBC 40 Willys blew up in August of 1960 and caught on fire. The clutch exploded and the interior Moon Tank caught on fire. After the remnants of the Willys was salvaged, the Lions safety management made a decree to immediately move all Moon Tanks from inside of the cab to the front of the engine or to the back trunk area.

When I was taking photos of this Willys in the museum, a chill ran up my spine as it looked exactly like our version of the 40 Willys, except for the grill. We deposited the remnants of the burned out red primer, Willys at a local Wilmington Salvage Yard and just left it there. From the cowl back to the rear bumper was in pristine condition. But, the rest had bad memories, so, everything was left at the salvage yard.

We sold the 671 SBC motor to a guy from the Midwest in 1961 and the rest of the remaining parts locally through the Drag News Paper advertising.

Could this museum relic be the resurrected 40 Willys from Wilmington? “Only the Shadow knows…” Similarities exist...

This photo is from 1972 at US 30 Indiana, about to make a resurgence hopefully this year at the Meltdown! Been stored since then untouched.
