I'm in search mode for raw material sources here in Colorado. I use Bob at Alreco out in Brighton for all my aluminum needs. I would love to find something like Alreco for cold rolled sheet goods, structural tubing, and DOM.

Are there any Colorado companies that are cool with small quantity buyers? I don't mind buying full sheets or lengths, I'm just not someone who needs to drop a couple grand on a single order.

Who do you buy your cold rolled sheet (18 & 11 gauge), structural tubing like squares and rectangles, and DOM tubing from?

I live up in Fort Collins, but I'm fine with driving down to Denver or even the springs to get stuff if I need to.

Thanks in advance everyone! Take care,

    David

Thanks Guys! I'll check both places out.

Any other sources out there that people like to use?

I'm sure your responses will be super helpful to others as well.

Altitude Steel down in the Auraria Campus off Colfax usually has what you would need.

Have you tried Winograd's Steel in Greeley? They should be able to fix you up, and it's close to you.

  9. I think Winograd is out of bidness for a while now.
I use to get new stock at Andersons, but they stoped doing that a while ago.

I remember now, have you been to
    Colorado Iron & Metal
    1400 E Mulberry St
    Fort Collins, CO 80524-3518

Last time I was by there a few weeks ago, I think the name changed and they painded the building. Metal distributors or something like that.

I've had good luck with Colorado Iron and Metal. There here in town (FoCo) on the north side of Mulbarry(sp?) just east of Lemay.

Al-rippo, because you don't know how much you're paying per pound and how much it weighs. It's what ever the traffic will bear........ but he does have aluminum.

Also C & M Metals (usable store) on old Hampden near River Point. Be careful, it's Sheridan and the cops lurk.

    Thommyknocker and Iceburge460,

I have used Metal Distributors (which was Colorado Iron and Metal, and Nelson Metals before that). John, the guy who owns/runs the place is a nice enough guy, but his pricing is so high it's crazy. He's now the only real source in the area.

Just to give you some idea of how high his pricing is, I can typically buy a small load of steel out of Portland Oregon, or other places in the Midwest, have it delivered by truck freight to my door for sometimes "Half!" of what he charges. None of the fabricators or machine shops I know up here buy form him unless it's an emergency.

It didn't use to be that way. I used to buy a lot of stuff from John. But for some reason or another, Metal Distributors made a business decision to substantially raise prices.

Because I make a small collection of bits and pieces that I sell, I need to be careful about what I pay up front for my materials. I also think it's ridiculous I'm getting materials cheaper from out of state. I should be doing my part by supporting the local and nearby economy.

I'm now at that funny place where I'm buying more than I used to, but I'm still not big enough to negotiate with the big houses like Jorgenson, or Ryerson. So I'm on the hunt for companies south of here.

    Thanks everyone!

    David

  14. Bummer, it's been a while since I needed anything from them.

I asked around, and apparently the guys at wynograd started something new.

I've yet to give them a call, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found three more I'm going to look at as well. One is called "Adams City Steel" in Denver, another is K&K Surplus (K&K lists new material on their website as well), and Hinton Steel in Denver.

What I'm going to do is make a day of it sometime next week, or the week after, and visit all of these places (except for Western Steel in the springs). I'll introduce myself, tell them what I'm up to, and also try to get a feel for what kind of customer they are comfortable servicing. I'll tell them I'm also looking for others.

Then I'll report back to this thread with what I find out (I hope that's OK with the Moderators). Things like what types of materials are they specializing in, and what the people are like. Whether they require an account to buy from them would be good to know. I'll even try to get some idea of pricing if I can. I'll also ask if they ship for those out of the area.

These are the outfits I have on my list to visit so far:

    Revelation Steel, Greeley
EDIT: Added Norfolk Iron & Metal, Greeley (thanks rexrogers!)
    K&K Surplus, Commerce City
    Adams City Sales, Commerce City
Adams City Steel, Denver (I know, strange, maybe they're brothers)
    C&M Iron & Metal, Denver
    Dencol, Denver
    Hinton Steel, Denver
    Altitude Steel, Denver

It's possible the Adams City Steel and Adams City Sales are the same company with two locations. I'll soon find out.

If I have time, I might just stop into Jorgensons in Denver, and see if they'll even talk to me. I have an occasional need for some exotics, and Jorgensons deals in all the strange stuff.

If I've missed something, just let me know.

    Take care all!

I don't think dencol does cold rolled tubing and flat stock, I would like to find a source for small buys also. They do have cold rolled sheet steel tho.

  19. Perfect!

And they will cut what you need to size, and you don't have to make a large order.
