When I built my Austin a decade ago I looked at working with the stock axle, but after thinking it over and looking at how puny it was, I decided not to use it. Not much bigger than my thumb in diameter, and I wanted a slightly wider axle also. My Austin is 5"narrower than an Anglia, so it needed a 36" kingpin to kingpin axle. I also figured the extra weight of a SBC and trans might be too much for the axle, so I bought a tube axle instead.
Looking back I'm happy with my choice, as it's held up well after 15,000 miles now.

1971BB427: Good to know that your big Austin's axle is just slightly bigger than my small Austin. I however, want a puny axle since my 1000 cc engine isn't going to pull any wheelies. I had previously checked with Pete & Jakes and they could build me a narrow tube axle but I really didn't want the big spindles and such. Where did you source your axle?

goldmountain, I would talk to rudestude about his. The bosses are the same as Anglia. Get a good number on the pin bore. It may be .688" or close enough to bore Anglia spindles for OS pins. It's tubular, easy to cut and shut. Just a thought. Mike
