Be aware that those shocks are usually cores. Rebuilding them is not hard IF you can get them apart. The screw in outer plate is, or can be a real bear to break loose. There are a few folks selling rebuilt units. Brentwood Bob, on the Fordbarn classifieds may be a source. Hang onto your pants when you see the prices these things go for, even for cores. Do a search on ebay, also. There are reproductions available from some Model A parts vendors. Equally expensive. :(

Back when I was doing my Model A, I started with a 5 gallon pail of them. Took the whole bunch to make 4 usable shocks.

There is a great book available, "Model A Ford Houdaille Hydraulic Suspension", that goes into great detail of the rebuilding process. Most people don't realize that there are left and right shocks as stamped AC and CW. I built a fixture that the shock bolts to and I use a 24" wrench or a 1 and 1/2" socket to break the flange cover after soaking them in penetrating oil for a week or so. A small punch will usually free the reservoir lock ring and a strap wrench to remove the reservoir cover. You will also need a punch set to remove the vent plugs and check valves. Most internal parts are available, but bring your wallet. Remember, those shocks are now over 90 years old and just about every part will be worn out and unusable. Rebuilt set's are available, but will run between $1200 to $1500.

  5. A couple of years back there were excellent reproduction shocks available for about $1200 for four from a company called Stripe Machine. Check over on fordbarn and see what they say
