I've got a 49 GMC i want to put in, or near the weeds, but i don't want to go buy some 5G kit, or rip up some ford mustang for an independent front end. I'm new to chassis and suspension work and I'm looking for a low front with my straight axle, (or if i have to, an independent) and a lower, adjustable rear. I'm looking to be able to tail drag, but get over speed bumps sometimes too. Has anybody ever built thier own airbag system cheap?
I Could Get You A Front Back Kit With Everything And The Notch For About 1500 That Includes It All Except Shipping
That sounds like a damn decent price, but still more than I have to spend on this now. I'll keep it in mind, maybe summertime.
does it have leafs? if so cut the rear mount rivets, flip the mount and bolt it back on, balso take some leafs out..................flyn
Take a few leafs out of the front and rear. If that's not low enough, have the front axle dropped and use lowering blocks in the rear. Unfortunately, the lower you want to go, the more money or work it will take. -Rich
I was thinking blocks and a c-notched rear for the back. for the front, taking out leafs and maybe reversing the main spring. Dropped (bent) axle-wise, anybody ever done that themselves? if not, where do I go to buy one or have mine modified?
water the lawn for 3 days straight, then park it. you'll be in the weeds cheaper than ever thought possible.
"ZEE" the frame at the firewall up to the thickness of the frame, same thing at the rear. You'll have to modify the cab floor, steering column, radiator support, inner fender panels, bed floor, but you'll be down there with full suspension travel and you can still haul that load of hay when need be.
There's some guys on here that drop axles, look in the HAMBODEX. There have also been some tech articles on building an axle dropping jig and useing it. Reversing the spring eyes is easy but labor intensive, should also be a tech article on that if you look around. uif you don't find one drop me a note I'll make you up a picture of the fixture and give you instructions. blocks on the back and a C notch is also a good idea or if you want to bag it the easiest way ot do it is with trailing arms like from an early 60s Chebby truck and get your bags from a lincoln from the later 80s or early 90s. They normally run about 5-10 bucks a bag at the local u pull it you'll need 2 bags. With a little creative buying and fabbing you could bag it for less than 300.00.
