I just bought 4 1935 wire wheels. Expected delivery next Monday. I hope they are in good enough shape. I’ll need to decide on tires now. Will also eventually want the center caps for the wheels.

  3. .......Did you register it "Street Rod" or "Historic"? You know you can get a "permanent" "Historic", pay once and never have to pay again.

I’m also picking up a MD 1930 vintage plate. I didn’t have it to do the registration but it will still be cool just to have.

Any tire recommendations? Which tires? Bigs and littles? Or at least wider and narrower. Where to purchase? Tubes? Not looking for the most expensive.

  7. I would wait until you have the wheels in hand before you order tires. You will likely be limited in your size selections by the width of those wheels. They will require tubes and also a liner to protect the tubes. Coker in Chattanooga is probably your best source. You might want to give them a call ahead of time and get their thoughts on what will fit on the '35 wires. Make sure before you mount any tires that all of the spokes are in good shape and not loose or bent. Will they need to be painted or powder-coated before you use them? Hopefully they are nice and straight and not bent in any way.

  8. Maybe it's just me and maybe I should have expressed it earlier, but I would rather you went with some steel wheels. I love the look of the wires, but they can be high maintenance sometimes.

  9. Before you do anything with the Wheels bolt them on a Hub and give them a spin checking for Runout. Hope you have grate results.

  10. For me, and I like Wire Wheels it's more about the Total package if Wires have the right look or not.

Hmmmm. Well I’ve all ready pulled the trigger on these. I like the look of the 1935 wire wheels. I like black. They have already been blasted and powder coated. I know they still look a bit rough. So... maybe just tell me it will all be okay. Ha!

I was on the fence. I like the look of both but now I’ve bought these. Hopefully they are straight without issues. I think they will look good with some center caps.

I’m considering cutting them off. Please chime in if you have opinions about this so I don’t feel stupid after I let the sparks fly. [emoji2]

Regarding wire wheels, do you know about the nubs on the hubs?

After a quick google search I now know what a nub is. I will ask the seller about the nubs.

You guys have been great about guiding me along and educating me in the process. Much appreciated.

  17. I mentioned that a while back as well.

Those wires look pretty damn rough. I would triple check them before sinking any extra coin into them

Don’t cut off the rear bumper brackets, just unbolt and remove. They don’t add to body rigidity, the body supports them in the back.
In regards to the nubs on the stock hubs, they work fine with stock wheels and 35 wires, but need to be cut off or spacer used when used with solid steel wheels.

Thanks. I’ll remove not cut off. Thanks for the clarification on the nubs for these wheels.

Thanks Tman. Good advice. I guess I should have ran these passed you guys before buying. Lesson learned. Hopefully they will work out.

The nubs are on the hubs, not the wheels. There are support nubs, or sometimes a ring, inboard of the studs that support the inside of the wheel. This sits about a quarter inch proud of the mounting surface. The stock A wheels and any wires through 35 need this support to bolt up tight. Otherwise they look like they are bolted up, but they will flex and crack.

If you decide to run later wheels like 40 Ford steelies you will need to remove this support nub from your A hub. Or, conversely, if you decide to use later juice brakes like 40 Ford brakes you will need to add in support to keep your wires in good shape.

Great HAMB guidance here, as usual. I'd suggest one more thing, though...being a HAMB Alliance member, it has led to BIG discounts with participating vendors.
COKER tire especially...the $50 spent for a year Alliance more than paid for itself with the purchase of 4 Coker tires!
Consider it. Love your 'A', and the careful steps you've taken: A guy with a great shop can only do great things...looks like you're there.

I guess I could always resell those wheels. Which steel wheels would you recommend?

40-41 are 4" wide, 42-48 are 4.5", F-1 from 49-52ish are 4.5" also, but there are some 16"ers made in 5" wide for pickups if you are very lucky. Basically the centers of all these are the same stamping, and will accept 40-48 hubcaps.

All these will require you to machine the nubs off the hubs. Some guys say you can put spacers opposite the nubs, but it might make the studs too short for a nut.

You might want to contact @drdave about his tire sizes on the '35 wires he is running in his Model A.
