We were up through the area last year, On the way to CCR. All backroads from North Fl to Ohio.
We stumbled upon Harriman TN. What a cool place.
It seems that the prices in Tennessee have gone through the roof with imaginative asking prices. Seeing places on the market that are dropping 25k after 30 days.
Ill send you a DM, would be great to have local knowledge!

I live about 90 miles from Mena, in Oklahoma, so it’s about the same weather. It is hot and humid in the Summer. Stay away from NW Arkansas, it is becoming a metropolis! Souther Arkansas is nice!

  3. SERIOUSLY????

10 months of summer is a car guys dream ! The only seasonal change I would like to see is...Summer to "Summerer"! Living in Ohio with basically one really good season (summer for a couple months), two hit or miss seasons (spring & fall) with the vast majority being the Sh1tty Season (winter), I would love to live somewhere warmer & have spent extensive time in Nice, Warm States, but because of elderly Parents, Wifes work, Etc, I am stuck cussing basically 9 months of the year!

@alanp561 ...Those aren't seasonal changes, they are just minor bumps followed by more great weather after a couple of days compared to Ohio! :D

    God Bless

Seems I read where they assess the value and tax movable property (vehicles, boats, atv, campers, aircraft) every year as part of your property tax is this correct?

Tell that to all of us that live in south Florida.
Its simply miserable to drive an old car down here for at least 6 months. Then top it with the idiots on the roads year round.

  11. Can't do anything about the idiot drivers (Everybody thinks their state has the worst), but I have spent LOTS of time in Florida/Georgia/South Carolina over the last 40 years & while the humidity can be a bit rough for those that are out of shape....It is still much better than 6 inches of snow & road salt all over the car!

So this doesn't turn in to FaceBook, I will bow out by saying.... moving to Tennessee with Alan is a good idea if you sweat a lot as it has less high humidity days than South Florida!

Yes, but it isn't much. When I was still driving nails for a living they wanted to tax all my tools. I got pissed, but then discovered they wanted something like 8 bucks a year for the tools I finally told them I had. I don't know how our taxes generally compare, but when I read what some folks elsewhere pay for like their real estate tax, can hardly believe it. The cars with antique tags on em they don't seem to care what they may really be worth. Do other states?

Its beatiful country up there. Kiamichi mountains, Ouchita national forest & some great roads for cruising. We've got a place in the farthest corner of SE Ok. We drive to Mena for groceries. We are planning to move full time after our son graduates.

  14. Late to the party, but I'm in Conway, about 30 miles north of Little Rock. We're just at the bottom of the hills, so not flat like south Arkansas (I'm not saying flat is bad, just giving the lay of the land). Conway is smaller than LR, but being only 30 minutes away, the "big" city, airport, big hospitals, etc, is pretty close. Conway was voted like the fasted growing city in the US or something like that last year, so folks moving here. Just outside of town is reasonably rural, so there are places to still be close but out of the commotion. We are an hour from Greer's Ferry Lake, maybe two from Mountain View, both of which are gorgeous. Weather is what you'd expect for the south. Little toasty and muggy today, but I'm driving old cars to work in Jan, so I can deal. LOL

As @leon bee has said, yes, there are property taxes on cars, boats, trailers, etc besides your house. The taxes on all 9 old cars combined is less than my new truck. LOL Even that isn't real high. Personal property tax last year (9 old cars, 3 "regular" cars, the boat, a few trailers, etc) was $1900.

Is that separate from registration fees?

We should mention that AR has always taken the state parks seriously. Petit Jean, Mt. Magazine, others. Really beautiful. I guess I'm straying some, but it's a pretty good place to live. I have an historic house in town, a shop near the lake on 4 acres, couple newish cars, old cars, 8 or 9 registered (antique) motorcycles, couple boats.........on and on. Total taxes for all that been running about $1600 a year.

Edit: Just remembered that I kind of aged out on the real estate taxes. When you get to like 65 you can get it frozen. Or could, anyway, so my info could be a little misleading.

I had a project in Stillwell OK and we always stayed in Siloam Springs Arkansas when I had site visits. I kinda liked the area around there on the Arkansas side. Pretty rural and some hills and trees and rivers.

Well, I’m sure that most of you would hate upstate New York, but if you like 4 seasons we got them. Here’s winter from the front window:
    IMG_0379.jpeg

    And here’s summer: IMG_0531.jpeg
And we get hot, humid, hazy, horrible weather in the summer, maybe 3 or so weeks total in the summer. I’ve got a small stream in the back out in the woods. And not much lawn by choice.

Oh well, I guess it all comes down to personal preferences

  24. Yes, as stated above, registration fees are separate from the property tax I stated above. Registration is real reasonable. Antique cars are registered once and have a permanent plate and don't need to be registered again. Technically, to qualify for that, the car has to be stock/original. Lots of folks put those plates on hot rods and customs....I run regular plates on mine. Better the $22 than the ticket if someone was in a bad mood. LOL

Arkansas consistently ranks as one of the lowest cost of livings. Of course, we don't have what Dallas, NYC or LA have to offer, but for what you save you can go visit. LOL

  25. Here's what we jokingly called the blizzard of 2019 in Arkansas. And then, 48 hours later.

Summer is best though for hot rodding and motorcycling. I could go from my house to Mountain home, a distance of 57 miles and only one traffic light and 2 stop signs. I also liked that I was able to build my own house and needed no permits. The only regulation there was federal rules for around water

If i were going to do it over again, I would find a small town that needed young people to fix up an old house, spend money local, be part of the community.

At 50 and 58 we are not so young, but what you say is definitely describing us.
