  2. Not to rub salt on an old wound but ....

    https://news.cl***iccars.com/wayne-carinis-preserved-stutz-bearcat-hits-times-square/

Looks like the Stutz is headed for a high end California auction in August ...

    http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/23425/lot/84/?category=list&length=10&page=9

" Of all the cars Wayne Carini has discovered over the years, he considers this to be his ultimate find. The fact that a Stutz Bearcat - one of the greatest prizes in collecting since the hobby has existed and paired with its success in alluding discovery for 80 years and wonderfully preserved in such remarkable condition surely makes for a great story. One would be hard-pressed to score a better find today! As such, this should easily be considered the most original Bearcat in existence, and a truly exceptional example of one of the greatest icons of American motoring. "

On a somewhat happier note - hope the Model A I dropped off turned out to be worth
    hauling from Spokane, WA ....

  6. Well, I guess Wayne couldn't resist the money. I seem to remember him saying he would always keep it. Really, though, what could you do with such a piece but admire it while it goes up in value? Can you imagine what it would cost just to insure and store it in a climate controlled environment? A half a million dollar liability. It's now where it truly belongs - a museum piece like other undriveable beauties.

and this my friends is the reason when you see a cool old car rotting away in someones backyard and ask about buying it, they refuse to sell.

If I had some slick talk me into selling an old car for $40K and found out they flipped it for $half a mill, Id be really peeved.

I also have a couple old cars, that I hardly ever drive and people stop and ask about em.
"hell no, not for sale, goodbye.
you flippers are not gitting rich because I dont know the latest market value of my junk"

you hand me a legal form where you cant sell the car for 10 years and when you do sell I get 10% of the sale price, we might have something to talk about, otherwise, get the hell off my lawn you sorry flipper"

  9. My take on this ....

You can hear the Seller say " I trust you Wayne " as they finish cutting a deal off camera.

Wayne chases the dollar - plain & simple.

He milked this " find " by promoting it thru media advertising & sold it at the height of interest.

He bought the Stutz for 30K or less.

Wayne probably netted well over a million in proceeds from advertising & the auction.

Do you think the Seller is going to see any of that ?

Remember the episode. I'm not at all surprised with the outcome. The man does what he does, well. I wouldn't be so sure that some type of consignment/percentage deal wasn't struck with the owner. WC buys & sells for clients all the time, it's part of his business. To get a rep as a less than honorable player would be pretty detrimental in his line of work. Remember, he plays in the BIG leagues where rep caries A LOT of weight. FWIW, his show is one of the most watchable on the tube, as car shows go..

Let's be honest...very few of us on this board have what it takes to move that kind of weight. You don't just put a Stutz on craigslist. Wayne moves in circles that I can only wonder at. He has the reputation, the working capital and the contacts. Nobody bothered to call me and tell me about a barn find Stutz, and for good reason. Even if I had s****ed up the asking price, there is no way I could have called the Stutz guru on the phone and gotten past the receptionist, let alone get him to fast track the project. Pebble Beach would still be laughing at my application to bring a car to their gr***y gathering. Bonhams would never accept a consignment from somebody like me, with no reputation. Potential buyers wouldn't believe the story of the barn find Stutz coming from me, and would question the provenance to the end of days. Subs***ute Wayne Carini for me, and suddenly all those doors open, and the unbelievable becomes the gospel truth. And for that...the man gets paid. Deservedly so.

The seller set the price, Wayne paid it, end of that part of the story. The car was made roadworthy, won a few awards and two guys set the market value of the car at that time and place. Winner has a great car to look at now, time to move on. Bob

I would love to know WHERE that car was found. If the price seemed to be a secret for a time, the location seems to have been top secret. I see that barn hunter is from Savannah and I'm frequently in that area.

The same way Camaros end up on cement blocks in back yards. In 1931 that was just another second hand car. The miracle is that it was kept indoors all those years, and never sent to the s**** yard not even in the s**** drives in WW2.

Yes, it survived the s**** drives but also, just about anything that could be pressed back into service during the war years often was, provided tires could be had, as all civilian production of "consumer goods" was suspended in 1942 for the duration.

The Stutz was on a large estate out in the country near Brooklet, Georgia. No one would have ever guessed that it was where it was, but that's what keeps me looking. There are still treasures to be found. I shared a pic of an incredibly solid and dusty 34 roadster in another thread a while back. Much more HAMB friendly, but not for sale....

If it was Wayne's when it was sold for $549K and if he indeed bought in the $30K range even with the money spent making it run and drive plus across the continent for the showing if I were Wayne would go see the seller again with another $30K I my hand and give to him explaining he too was surprised on its value.
Wayne may just need to stand in front of a very high alter some day and explain himself...he maybe asked to go over and stand in another line.
I am NOT Wayne but no matter the deal I need to sleep at night.
I too like the show and know I'm not in their league.

What if I lose money on a deal or it turns out the condition was worse than the seller let on? Do I get my money back? I ask purely for information. This is important, as I have lost money on a car deal more often than made money. But nobody ever offered to give my money back.

I hate it when the flipper haters start their chin music. "I'll take it." That's step 1. steps 2 through 1200 about the topic car are unknown by many but carry a price higher than most here would ever pay. I know of restoration shops out there that $125/hr. How far will you get with a couple grand at those rates? Not very. Sure it's rarified air up there sometimes, but so what? Lets go **** on all the owners of 60+ foot yachts while we're at it. They only need an aluminum fishing boat:D Just had fun with a 356 Porsche topic. Should we hate on those too? If I found and did everything Wayne did with that car I'd sleep REAL WELL at night knowing I took care of me and mine REAL WELL. Holy ****, hope you don't pick on real estate folks...
