Forgive me for such a question.. but seems i have lost my key for 49 fleetline. Im not familiar with removing the cylinder / wiring . Would this be the best approach - to order a new switch and put in or have a locksmith come by? Sure appreciate if anyone knows a good source for this part and any install info. thanks GP

I have solved this problem by taking out a door lock, taking it to a locksmith and having a key made. This is cheaper than a house call. The problem is there don't seem to be any lock smiths any more. And, if you call yourself a locksmith and can't key a 5 pin Yale lock, you are no lock smith.

This ***umes door and ignition take the same key. You can also take out the ignition lock and take it to a locksmith.

It might be easier and cheaper to buy new lock cylinders and keys, the trouble is you need the key to get the old cylinder out. You can drill it out if you have to but be careful not to damage the lock.

You may want to try this first because it's cheap and easy. If it doesn't work you're only out $2-$3.
Take a blank key and get it sooty black with an oil lamp. Put key in and rock it back and forth about 10-20 times. Remove it and the tumblers will clean areas off. File away the black areas.
It takes time but has worked for me.

buy a few key blanks, and make a key for it using the info on my web page (you'll have to root around for the page you want).

But yeah, first take out the door lock cylinder to get the number. And hope it was the same on the ignition and door, because often the ignition lock cylinder gets replaced on old cars.

have you actually been able to do that on a Briggs & Stratton side bar lock, as used in old GMs? they don't have tumblers, you know

  7. Be sure to try every GM key you and your friends have. There used to be a limited number of combinations.

there is a sort of large number of combinations, but you don't really need the exact key to get it to turn. There are four levels and five bars. 5 to the 4th power is 625, you know. But you can usually get one to turn if you have 40 quite different keys to try
