Here's the scene. I just replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the fuel filters. I try to start the car and it will not run. I tried many times, it did sound like it would start but wouldn't. Then it did start for a second or two. After that it has a different sound and does not appear to be getting a spark. Could I have burnt the coil or messed up the points in the dist by continually trying to start it. The car ran fine until I changed these things. This is on a '51 Plymouth flathead 6.
    Thanks for any ***istance.

Not a dumb question. The fuel filter is one of those ceramic styles that only fit one way but thanks for asking. I did find out that I have spark at the coil but not at the spark plugs. I plan on replacing the cap, rotor, points and condenser. We'll see.

Did you use the right sparkplugs?
I changed sparkplugs on my Ford flathead a long time ago, and after that it felt weak.
And the oil smelled gasoline.after some driving.
Anyway long story short, it was the exhaust valve's hitting four of the sparkplug tips and closing the gap completely!!

    Start to check the gap's.

After that run the starter with the plugs out and check for a fat blue spark.
Yellow indicates bad condensor , or coil. Condensor is cheap so change that one first.

If you dont have a spark at all check the point gap and all the cables....

The plug #'s are the same as what came out and what it calls for (295). I checked spark at the plug and it is a faint yellow. I will also pull a plug or two to check the gap. Thanks for the heads up.

Don't discount the coil wire either. I've had several of 'em go bad over the years.

    Update,

I replaced the cap, rotor, points and condenser, new coil and stole the coil wire from my jeep. Nothing! I pulled the plugs and checked the gap, they're fine. I pulled the coil wire and I'm not getting a spark. WTF!!! I'm getting pissed. Is there something I'm over looking? It ran before I did all this. I've traced my steps numerous times. I just can't figure this one out. The two small wires that hook to the coil aren't in the best shape but worked before. the one wire that attaches to the dist is the neg, correct?
    Any help would be fantastic.

    Update#2,
I was wrong, the wire that connects to the dist is supposed to be pos. I changed this and also found a non-conductive washer that goes on the dist first then the wire. All of this is fixed and I now have spark but no fire. Is it possible that it could be flooded? I tried starting fluid but no go. I may wait 'till tomorrow to try it again.
    Thanks
