I was looking hear on the HAMB, (Drag Car in Motoin thread ) & seen the brick ,I was like I seen that style of brick befor , they must have that style in other parts of the country, then I realized it was Old Domion Speed Way , Pretty much of my family has worked there from start to the end including Me
I grew up there , I wish I paid more attention in early 70's to the cars then Runing around chasing Fuzzy Norton daughter & a few other @ the track !!
But late 70's I was lucky to witness and stand at the starting line ( Tree ) between BAD A$$ car's , until it pretty much closed ,the circle track and Drag strip in the beginning was dirt then went asphalt,
This is why I am addicted to speed & cars , &I have a fast H-R,
Sad to say in those many years I witnessed Death ,@ my home track I grew up @
I am one of the LUCKY one's to be able to stand @ starting line @ MIR in Md
    For Top Fuel D , F/C , Pro Mod's ,PS , Funny Bike ,Fuel Bike , A/D , A/FC
all the Cl***es , and have ran in Blown Out Law ,
My grand father told me Sevreal story after he did his tour in WWII sneaking threw the woods & lying on the Ground against the wood fence (guardrail ) watch the Roundy Round Race IMG_1114.JPG IMG_1110.JPG IMG_1113.JPG IMG_1109.JPG IMG_1108.JPG IMG_1112.JPG IMG_1108.JPG IMG_1109.JPG

Wisconsin, Milwaukee area, The Milwaukee Mile, I believe is finished, they auctioned off the bleechers, the short track inside Milwaukee Mile, been gone since early 60's, Hales Corner Speedway, Cederburg Speedway, Columbus raceway near Sun Prairie, Lake Geneva, Oshkosh (in contract dispute), Manitowoc and the Douseman Kart track is under restrictions due to sub division building around it. Some other Wisconsinites/Cheeseheads can add to the list, these are the ones I thought of.

There was the 1/4 mile Waukegan Speedway 40 miles north of Chicago which operated from 1949-1979. We lived on the north side of Waukegan about 5 miles from it but every Saturday night in the summer you could hear them racing....

First race program (midgets) held on September 4, 1949—heat races won by Harry Turner, Chuck Marshall and Ernie Zartler, feature rained out… a week later, Jimmy Caris won the first midget feature race at the track…quarter mile track was dirt/clay from 1949 through 1968, paved in November of 1968 for the 1969 racing season…first race on new pavement held on April 12, 1969…paved track until 1978 when it was returned to a dirt surface…last race program held on September 15, 1979...

    Here's a (poor quality) video from 1951....

Damn Don, good stuff. Maryland was a Hot Bed for sure. You could go to a different track every weekend for a year and never leave the state. Not bad for a state ranked 42 out of 50 in size.
