I'm looking at an old Econoline Pickup in a salvage yard. They are having a problem locating the title. They know the family that it came from however the owner may have passed, What have you guys done to get titles, I am in New Jersey.

    Thanks Joe

Ive had a situation sorta similar. I bought my 56' Buick off a guy in Indiana (i was 18 at the time). Problem was he never got the title transferred into his own name. He bought the car from the original owner guy MN who died 20+ years ago. Needless to say my DMV wanted a million records from MN. Pain in the ass. It took some typical 'Chicago' under the table deals to get to work out :)

All i got to say is good luck. Hopefully your state has a better system.

They should have filed the paperwork with the Motor Vehicle system, when they took it into the yard, to take ownership of it. They should be the ones doing a lost title search, and getting a new one, so they can sell it to you. It should not be in the name of the previous owners anymore, but in the name of the yard, unless they have failed to do their job properly.

  4. Jersey is a real pain in the ass if there's no title, most guys get around it by finding a friend in Pennsylvania to "buy" the car from who can get it titled there.
