That's the exact plan for my '50 shoebox, 2" straight pipes all the way out the back! If its too loud I'll buy some Porter 12" steel packs.

Just don't get caught using it. I have a Nathan p 3 and a Nathan p 5 train horns under my sleeper. People sure pay attention when getting blasted with one. I got a ticket from a Chp that pissed himself when I blasted a car that cut me off from my right and he was under my left Side of my trailer on the 134 and 210 interchange in Pasadena ,ca .

    The ticket was $350.00

  3. Residents have always been able to drop a dime on you. The 311 line just frees up the police dispatcher for other more important things.

The perception seems to be if I don't like your loud pipes I'm a old *****. I really don't give a **** one how loud your car is.......but I know first hand how YOUR loud vehicle can have a negative impact on MY hobby. In addition to an old car addiction, I like to go off roading.
A few years ago, the City and County went after off road enthusiasts with the intent of closing off most of the riding areas in the community.
When it came time for the Public Hearings, pissed off home owners out numbered off road enthusiasts 100-1 and the riding areas were eventually closed.
The number one complaint from homeowners??? NOISE!! not dust....not trash....not speeding in residential areas.....NOISE!

    Exactly!
Many drag strips and circle tracks have been closed because neighbors *****ed about the noise.
I enjoy a good sounding (loud) exhaust but I'm aware that I'm in the minority. Not too many are going to complain about a loud car during rush hour but some ***hole running open headers through a neighborhood at 3:00 AM is gonna ruin it for others.

I have run open headers for extended periods of time if you drive it right it does not have to be obnoxious, but it you drag launch from every stop light and hammer through neighborhoods you are usually being a ****.

I think I am the only person not pissed off by straight pipped liter bikes.

  9. That comment is right on. Plus it doesn't have to be "driven" loud, very annoying.

  10. I think you will like it. Mine sounds great idling on the driveway.
Sometimes, when I'm in a narrow street, or alley, I hear echo from the tips off the wooden fences, but I've asked the sprint car team I'm on what they think and they like it. Of course, they may not be the most objective, but then I've asked non-car neighbors, and none of them are annoyed by my exhaust.
I'm sure to idle out of the neighborhood when I leave or come home at odd hours. I don't think it's asking too much to think of your neighbors when it comes to noise. That includes running the compressor, or body work, or any number of things that hot rodders do on their driveways.
If my neighbors think I'm alright, they will be more prone to look at other rodders and think they are alright too.
How we act makes who we are...

  11. LOL, I had a younger friend ( my daughters age) stop by the other evening to take a look at my new/old bike. I lit it off for him and he smiled, and said, "Sounds pretty healthy pops, you need to get some mufflers."

One of the problems with the public calling in that I see at least for the police dept is that the general public cannot write you a ticket, so the cop still has to catch you driving it around to write you. They are not going to go out looking for you, there are too many 24 hour donut shops out there.

I have NEVER had 1 complaint about my open headers. I have come home very late at night(in a neighborhood) and nobody seems to really care. I have hammered by cops open headers blasting, never a problem. It seems to me that certain parts of the country are more uptight and *****'ish than others. Here in mississippi people just mind there own freakin' buisness! Had a kid stop at my house one afternoon on his bicycle,he looked to be maybe 13 or 14..anyways,he told me i had p***ed him and his mom earlier that day in there minivan.....He said my truck was so loud it rattled the windows in there van....He continued to say "It was so awsome, one day im gonna build me a truck like that"....So the way i see it im just inspiring kids to build hot rods

I tend to like good sounding vehicles, and a very loud vehicle doesn't bother me if it sounds alright. I think the problem is that guy who has to make sure you hear him, you know the guy I mean. The hillbilly in his bone stock truck who takes off from a light like its a race, all the Harley riders who rap there pipes while sitting and idling in front of the bar for twenty minutes, people who will floor it in a parking lot and then slam on the brakes to go ten feet but do it loud. I work until 11pm on weeknights, and sometimes until 1am, and I've never once been pulled over at night and none of my neighbors have ever complained.

In California, sound laws are hard to enforce. The vehicle code states, and I don't remember the exact wording, but something to the tune of 95 decibals while traveling at 30 mph from a distance of ? feet. Very hard for a cop to write up, if not in possesion of a decibal meter. (my neighbor is a cop). I know the few times I have been pulled over for too loud, I got a bunch of stupid little fix it tickets, and the "this things a little loud" comment. Every time, it was. Not just loud, but obnoxiously so. While I like a good sounding car, I like a good tone to it too.
This sounds like a property value law. Lots of people moving to Texas. We wouldn't want them to see a native in their natural habitat. Loud old cars and bikes lower the perceived property values for the Priusites.

  15. Coolest thing I ever heard was at about 3:30 am in the black hills of South Dakota.
Its almost dead quiet at that time except for the rouge cricket, frog, or owl.
Some Harley probably about 3 miles away and the echos from his pipes playing off the mountains . Awesome.

My latest v8 exhaust system is a wonder to behold !
So far everyone loves the notes and can talk almost normally at the tailpipes. The feet tickle and you feel more than you hear. its slightly past the border of reasonable at 3500 Rpms but sounds awesome. It's deafening (hurts) at the tailpipes at 6000 Rpms but still sounds good at 20 feet

I guess the HAMB is now big enough to have somebody taking offence to almost anything somebody else may post.

And that includes most things to do with Hot Rodding...
